Sobriety Checkpoint Uncovers Various Offenses
During a sobriety checkpoint held during the evening of Saturday, July 23, and early morning hours of Sunday, July 24, police made no arrests for drunken driving, but charged motorists with a variety of other offenses, including three custody arrests.
Ten police officers and one supervisor participated in the checkpoint, which was held at the intersection of Wasserman Way and Trades Lane at Fairfield Hills.
On July 23, police stopped a vehicle in which Brian Gibbons, 22, of 55 Cedar Hill Road was a passenger. Police said an investigation revealed that Gibbons was in possession of 19 packets of heroin.
Police charged Gibbons with possession of narcotics and with possession of narcotics with intent to sell within 1,500 feet of a school. The checkpoint site was near Reed Intermediate School.
 After processing his arrest, police released Gibbons on a written promise to appear August 9 in Danbury Superior Court.
At about 8:45 pm July 23, police stopped motorist Buster Roschem, 25, of Bridgeport and learned the vehicle he was driving had an expired registration sticker.
Police charged Roschem with driving an unregistered vehicle and with driving while under suspension.
After arrest processing, police released Roschem for an August 2 court appearance.
At about 11 pm July 23, police stopped motorist William Rozza, 23, of Hartford and charged him with failure to display a front marker plate.
In the course of their investigation, police learned that Rozza was wanted by the Meriden Police Department on a charge of evading responsibility in connection with an April 21 motor vehicle accident. Newtown police turned over Rozza to Meriden police.
