Elizabeth A. English

Elizabeth A. English, a junior at Newtown High School, received a $2,500 scholarship from Discover Card. She was one of nine Connecticut students picked from 10,000 applicants. Students must have a minimum 2.75 cumulative grade point average as well as demonstrate accomplishments in the following areas: special talents, leadership, obstacles overcome, and community service.

Kathryn L. Burns of Sandy Hook was recently named to the dean’s list at Keene State College for the spring 2001 semester.

Katherine Speirs, the daughter of Mr and Mrs Jeffrey R. Speirs of Newtown, received a bachelor of arts degree from Hamilton College in commencement exercises on May 20. Miss Speirs is a sociology major and graduated magna cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa, as well as with departmental honors.

Kira E. Nelson, the daughter of Doug and Marilea Nelson of Newtown, graduated May 19 from the University of New Hampshire with a bachelor of arts degree in studio arts. She plans to attend graduate school at UNH for a master’s in teaching.

Erika Gellert, daughter of Dr Henry and Bea Gellert of Newtown, received a bachelor of arts degree from Tufts University on May 20. Miss Gellert majored in English and graduated cum laude from the university. She plans to remain in the Boston area to work in the magazine/publishing industry.

Michael Taylor of Newtown has been selected to attend the National Young Leadership Conference (NYLC) from July 29 to August 8 in Washington, D.C. He will be among 350 National Scholars from around the country attending the conference. This year’s theme is The Leaders of Tomorrow Meet the Leaders of Today.

Bonnie K. Shugrue of Newtown received a master of arts degree from Central Connecticut State University during commencement exercises held on May 26.

Kevin Richard Rice of Newtown received an A.B. degree in Biology from Lafayette College during the 166th commencement on May 19.

Two local residents received degrees from Providence College during the college’s 83rd commencement exercise on May 20. Jennifer Bacsik of Sandy Hook was awarded a bachelor’s degree in English. She graduated cum laude. Erin Cavanaugh of Botsford graduated magna cum laude with a degree in education/special/elementary level from the college.
