Newtown High School’s baseball team had no shortage of offense (or solid pitching for that matter) in a pair of lopsided, five-inning, mercy-rule wins — 14-1 over visiting Kolbe Cathedral of Bridgeport on April 30 and 12-1 at Immaculate of Danbury on May 2.

In the win over Kolbe, Collin Gevry doubled twice and Lucian Place, Jack Carta, and Pete Eppers all had doubles. Carta drove in three runs, Danny Leyva, Chris Moseman, and Gevry all drove in two. Jonathan Moseman, Kieran Garrity, Cam Kullgren, and Ryan Schmidt all knocked in a run. Chris Moseman, Place, and Leyva all scored twice, and Oscar Nordt, Garrity, Carta, Wes Keayes, Eppers, and Gevry all scored runs. Jonathan Moseman and Leyva both had stolen bases.

Schmidt and Keayes both pitched two innings, and Garrity tossed a frame; each pitcher allowed one hit and they combined to strike out six Kolbe batters.

Against Immaculate, the Nighthawks broke the game open with five runs in each of the third and fifth innings. Keayes had two doubles, drove in four, and scored a run; he also hit a home run in Newtown’s 11-7 win over New Fairfield on April 28 and has helped the Nighthawks register double-digit scoring three games in a row.

Garrity and Jonathan Moseman both tripled; Garrity drove in two and scored a run and Jonathan Moseman had an RBI and scored twice. Place had a hit, two RBI, and run scored; Leyva collected three hits and scored twice; Schmidt had a hit, two RBI, and run scored; J.T. Walsh walked three times and scored two runs; and Chris Moseman walked and scored. Walsh, Jonathan Moseman, and Schmidt all stole bases.

Jonathan Moseman pitched four innings, allowing one run on five hits, and striking out four; and Jamie Piccuillo tossed one inning, allowing no hits, and striking out all three batters.

“We’ve been playing great — hitting, pitching, and fielding have all been clicking,” Newtown Coach Ian Thoesen said.

The Nighthawks improved to 5-7 overall. A May 5 game versus Brookfield was rained out and rescheduled for Saturday, May 10 at NHS; first pitch is set for 2 pm. The Brookfield game follows Wednesday and Thursday games against New Milford and Masuk of Monroe (read about all of the action in the May 16 print edition of The Bee).
