Newtown Police arrested a Newtown teen Tuesday evening following an alleged attempted stabbing and carjacking.

Stephen Wengart, 19, was arrested at 9:56 pm June 3 on Appleblossom Lane, and charged with second-degree breach of peace, criminal attempt at murder, and second-degree threating-physical. He was later charged with larceny of a motor vehicle-first offense, first-degree robbery, robbery by carjacking, second-degree breach of peace, and second-degree assault.

According to Newtown Police, officers responded to a residence around 8:40 pm Tuesday for a reported domestic dispute. During the dispute, the victim was attacked with a knife, fled the residence, and dialed 911. The victim was treated for a minor laceration on scene by Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps (NVAC).

Officers began searching the area for the suspect, who had fled the residence prior to police arrival.

While searching for the suspect, officers responded to reports of someone screaming on Apple Blossom Lane, a road adjacent to where the assault had occurded. Officers responded to the area, located the suspect from the domestic dispute and took him into custody without incident. Victims and witnesses on scene at Apple Blossom Lane reported the suspect had called and made a food delivery order from a local restaurant.

When the delivery driver was walking back to their car with the order after the resident at the home told them they had not ordered any food, the suspect ran out of a hiding spot and struck the driver multiple times, pulled the driver from the car, and sat in the driver seat trying to drive the vehicle away. It was at this time Newtown Police arrived on that scene and the suspect complied with orders to exit the vehicle.

The suspect and victim were both injured during the altercation over the vehicle. The victim was transported to Danbury Hospital by NVAC for treatment.

Wengart was arrested and held on a total of $1 million bond with a court appearance of June 4 in Danbury Superior Court.

Wengart was the subject of a Purple Alert issued April 29 and was located by Newtown Police on May 5.

CT State Police recently updated and began training in its missing person investigation policies to meet the needs of certain individuals. Launched earlier this year, the Purple Alert Program addresses investigations of missing persons with an intellectual disability or other developmental disability. The alert is designed to bring special attention to those individuals who are especially vulnerable and may not be able to aid in their own recovery when missing. Purple Alerts are issued for all ages and are being used nationally, like their Silver and Amber counterparts for older and younger people, respectively.
