On Saturday, September 19, from 10:15 am-3:30 pm (with a short lunch break), The Society of Creative Arts of Newtown will host “Still Life Painting,” a workshop with Sarena Johnson.

The program will be at Art & Frame, 77 Main Street.

Cost is $100 per person ($75 SCAN members), and registration is required.

Students will learn the basics of a still life such as setting up a composition and developing an understanding of general design, lighting, making an under painting, and applying wet onto wet paint and fully rendering a portrait.

Students will work in a limited palette and learn about accurate color mixing and the nuance of temperature. Each participant will leave with a complete portrait.

Participants will need to provide their own oil paint set; brushes of multiple sizes, from small to 1½ inches; linseed or poppy oil; solvent; and a canvas around the size 10x12” that is the same proportion as a photo reference.

Students will also need to provide their own lunch.

Karen Israel Demo Planned

As a reminder, SCAN will present Karen Israel demonstrating “Slice of Life” in pastel on Tuesday, September 8, at 7:30 pm, at Newtown Senior Center, 8 Simpson Street.

The demonstration is open to the public and admission is free.

Israel is an elected member of many art organizations including American Artists Professional League, Hudson Valley Art Association, Pastel Society of America, Salmagundi Club, and Lyme Art Association. She conducts many teaching demonstrations and workshops throughout the United States and she has served as juror for many national competitions.

Reservations are not required for this program.
