Snapshot: John Batchelor
Family: My mother, Joan Alexander, who lives with me here in Newtown; my brother, Joseph Batchelor, who lives in Chicago, Illinois; and a large Italian family in southern California.
Pets: A dog, Georgie. She’s a rescue I found when I was living in Los Angeles. She was wandering the streets of South Central, and I don’t know what her full history was but she had just had a litter of puppies. You could tell she was a new Mommy, and so I took her home and I’ve had her for about 8 years now.
How long have you lived in Newtown? 2½ years.
Career: I am a real estate agent. I work for Berkshire Hathaway. I started my career as a real estate agent a year ago, after spending 25 years in the fashion and home furnishing industries.
What do you like to do in your free time? I enjoy working outside. I enjoy biking, swimming, music, karaoke. I also enjoy all things related to birds and aviaries.
What did you want to be when you grew up? I wanted to be a pilot.
Are you a member of any clubs, organizations and/or communities of faith? I am a member of Newtown Hook & Ladder. I just recently was voted into the role of Steward, which supports the department in their food and beverages department. I’ve been a Business member about a year and a half, which is a great opportunity to get involved at the community level. It doesn’t require a huge time commitment and it's a great way to be introduced to the department. I’m excited to be given this new role, which they just voted on and will be effective July 1.
I’m also a member of St Rose Church. I’m a member of Audubon Society of Connecticut. I’ve been a member of Friends of High Line for about 25 years, since its inception. Twenty-five years ago I lived in Chelsea, so my apartment building was right next to the High Line, and at the time it was a deserted, elevated train line that ran from 34th Street down to the meat packing district. I remember very early on they were doing fundraisers to raise money to initiate the rebirth of the high line and turn it into a park. I lived in Chelsea still when they opened the first phase, which went from Gansevoort Street to 23rd, and now it extends all the way up to 34th Street.
I’ve also been a member of Central Park Conservancy for about five years, which goes back to my roots of living in New York City for 18 years. A lot of the things I’ve come to enjoy were established while I lived in the city and they’re still part of my life.
Who would you like to be stuck in an elevator with? Molly Ringwald. I love her. She’s been one of my favorite since I was a child. I grew up on John Hughes movies in the 80s, and I follow her on social media, and I like what her life has become — she’s married, she has adult children, and she’s still symbolically cool to me on a very generational level. I think she would be a very interesting person to be stuck in an elevator with.
Do you have any surprising or unusual talents? I don’t know that it’s a talent, but something that brings me joy that’s kind of oddball is I like to fetch earthworms for my compost bin. I find it to be quite therapeutic to put on a pair of gloves and go look for earthworms and add them to my compost bin. Nobody in my life would ever imagine that I would put on a pair of gloves and go shopping for earthworms with a little bucket.
What was the most recent movie you saw in the theater? Wicked
Favorite actor? Molly Ringwald. Meryl Streep is also at the top of my list in terms of being inspired by the way she has been able to portray roles over the decades. She’s an amazing actress. I probably look up to her more than any other actor or actress.
What is something you cannot live without? Love.
Favorite food? I love all things carbs. Pasta or pizza are at the top of that list.
What is your favorite thing about Newtown? The people. I love the people here. They’ve been so welcoming over the past 2½ years, and they are very open, and objective to the world, and I really appreciate the warmth.
Do you have a personal credo? Live each day to the fullest.
