Flag Vandalized

Newtown Police report that the department was contacted by a homeowner on Berkshire Road, who reported that a flag attached to a mailbox was ripped down and the flagpole bent.

The incident occurred between August 2 and August 5.

Anyone with information that might help the investigation is asked to contact Officer Mulhall of the Newtown Police Department at 203-426-5841.

Rear Ended On South Main

Newtown Police report Ryan Mason, 24, of Naugatuck, operating a 2014 Hyundai Sonata, was traveling southbound on South Main Street at 3:33 pm August 6. Helen Watson-Cherry, 50, of Naugatuck, operating a 2019 Toyota Sienna, was traveling southbound on South Main Street ahead of Mason. Watson-Cherry stopped at the traffic signal waiting to make a left turn. Mason rear-ended her vehicle.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

Mason was issued a verbal warning for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart.

Hit Mailbox

Newtown Police report Michael Morrison, 39, of Sandy Hook, operating a 2016 Subaru Impreza, was traveling southbound on Berkshire Road at 3:14 am August 12. Morrison’s vehicle went off the roadway to the right and struck a mailbox, then continued across Chestnut Hill Road and off the roadway into some trees.

No injuries were reported. The vehicle was not towed.

Morrison was issued a verbal warning for failure to maintain a lane.

Parked Car Rolls Down Hill

Newtown Police report a 2004 Toyota Avalon owned by Lorina Ouimette of Newtown was parked unoccupied in a grassy area along the roadway on Turkey Hill Road at 5:38 pm August 12. The vehicle began to roll forward and travel down an embankment into private property. It struck a downed tree limb before coming to a rest.

No injuries were reported. The vehicle was not towed.

No enforcement action was taken since the incident occurred on private property.

Struck Rocks

Newtown Police report Terry Greene, 77, of Monroe, operating a 2019 Honda Ridgeline, was traveling northbound on Berkshire Road at 9:16 pm August 12. Greene exited the roadway right and struck a rock along the roadside. The vehicle continued straight, striking multiple rocks before coming to a rest just past a utility pole.

Greene was transported to Danbury Hospital with possible minor injuries. The vehicle was towed.

Greene was issued a verbal warning for operating a motor vehicle while using a handheld mobile device.

Found Wallet

Newtown Police report that on August 12, a ladies wallet that was found at a business on Church Hill Road was turned in to the Newtown Police Department. It was reported to police that the wallet may have been left at the business for over a year and not been turned in until this date.

The owner of the wallet is asked to contact Sergeant Lorancaitis or Officer Facto at 203-426-5841.

Mirrors Collided

Newtown Police report Richard Conrod, 67, of Newtown, operating a 2018 Ford F250, was traveling westbound on Nunnawauk Road at 8:27 am August 13. Berardino Zaccagno, 55, of Bethel, operating a 2021 StarTrans Senator II minibus, was traveling eastbound on Nunnawauk Road. As the vehicles passed each other, the driver’s side mirror of each vehicle connected with the other.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

No enforcement action was taken.

Collision In Parking Lot

Newtown Police report Franchini Corral, 16, of Newtown, operating a 2024 Ford Bronco, was backing out of a parking space in the lot of 5 Queen Street at 3:47 pm August 13. She backed into an unoccupied 2023 Subaru Impreza owned by James Rooney of Monroe. The incident was witnessed by a bystander who said Corral left the scene.

Corral said she did not believe she hit anything and there was no damage to her vehicle. Rooney reported there was damage to the rear passenger side of his vehicle.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

No enforcement action was taken since the incident occurred on private property.

Unaware Of Collision

Newtown Police report Thomas Ciccarone, 74, of Danbury, operating a 2010 Lexus RX 350, was parked in a parking lot on Pecks Lane at 4:28 pm August 13. A 2012 Cadillac CTS owned by Tyquan Bailey of Torrington was parked in an adjacent spot, unoccupied. Ciccarone struck Bailey’s vehicle. Ciccarone then left the area. Bailey provided surveillance footage from the exterior of the building showing the incident, but did not wish to press charges. When contacted, Ciccarone said he was unaware of the collision and did not feel the impact.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

Sierra Backs Into Jetta

Newtown Police report Joseph Boccuzzi, 50, of Fairfield, operating a 2020 GMC Sierra, was backing up from a parking space in front of the General Store on Main Street at 8:41 am August 14. Matthew Bahr, 29, of Newtown, operating a 2011 Volkswagen Jetta, was traveling southbound on Main Street and came to a stop in the southbound lane for a pedestrian crossing the roadway. The trailer hitch of Boccuzzi’s vehicle made contact with the right rear fender and tire of Bahr’s vehicle.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

Boccuzzi was issued a written warning for unsafe backing.

Teen Scooter Rider Hit

Newtown Police report Lara Freitas, 23, of Danbury, operating a 2023 Ram truck, was traveling westbound on Robin Hill Road at 6:03 pm August 14. A 13-year-old pedestrian riding an electric scooter exited a driveway and was struck by Freitas’ vehicle.

The pedestrian was transported to Danbury Hospital by his parents with an injury.

The pedestrian was issued a verbal warning for unsafe use of roads and sidewalks by a pedestrian.

Truck Hits Docking Bay

Newtown Police report Rodriguez Seraphin, 39, of East Taunton, Mass., operating a 2020 Freightliner tractor trailer, was attempting to dock with a docking bay at a business on Ethan Allen Road at 10:13 pm August 15. The trailer’s rear end struck the garage door of the docking bay.

No injuries were reported. The vehicle was not towed.

No enforcement action was taken since the incident occurred on private property.

Ran Red Light

Newtown Police report Gregory Nelson, 46, of Newtown, operating a 2016 Subaru Legacy, was traveling on Trades Way at 1:19 pm August 16. Christopher Danscuk-Miller, 30, of Monroe, operating a 2025 GMC Sierra, was traveling westbound on Wasserman Way approaching Trades Way. Nelson turned right onto Wasserman Way while a red traffic light was displayed in his direction, and was struck by Danscuk-Miller’s vehicle.

Danscuk-Miller reported a minor injury but declined transport. Nelson’s vehicle was towed.

Nelson was issued an infraction for failure to obey a traffic control signal.

DUI Charge

Newtown Police report officers responded to the report of a male passed out in a vehicle in the Big Y parking lot at 5:16 pm August 16. The vehicle was reported to have been driven erratically prior to parking. Upon arrival, officers found the man had woken up. He was identified as Michael Barbour, 37, of Newtown. Barbour was placed under arrest and charged with illegal operation of a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Barbour was released on a non-surety bond and given a court date of September 2 in Danbury Superior Court.

Juvenile Arrested For Theft From Car

Newtown Police report that at 1:35 am August 17, officers responded to the scene of a motor vehicle crash site in Trumbull. An on scene investigation determined that juveniles in operation of the vehicle had been in Newtown earlier and one of them had entered a parked unlocked vehicle and had stolen money from the vehicle. The juvenile was identified and charged with sixth-degree larceny.

The juvenile was given a court date at New Haven Juvenile Matters.

Monroe and Trumbull Police also investigated the stolen vehicle and accident incidents.
