Snapshot: Dorothy Rothstein
Family: I have a son and daughter-in-law and a daughter and son-in-law; two grandchildren, Amichai Kilchevsky and Raquefette, who are both graduates of Newtown High School; and six great-grandchildren. I was married to my husband, Meyer, for 80 years. He died at age 101.
How did you meet your husband? He lived half a block away from me, in The Bronx. We used to hang out — me with a group of girls, him with a group of boys — and it started from there. He came home on furlough during World War II. We had been dating, and writing to each other, and when he came home, as he was running up the steps I said to him “Guess what? We’re getting married Tuesday.”
Do you have any nicknames? I never liked Dottie. The only one who called me that was my mother. My grandchildren have called me Dar since they were little though, and my great-grandchildren call me Gigi.
Do you have any pets? I don’t have any now, but I had a dalmatian for years.
How long have you lived in Newtown? I’ve been at Maplewood since May 2024.
What do you like to do in your free time? I used to read a lot. I still enjoy being with people. I’m losing my vision but I like to listen to a few TV shows. The phone is also big source of comfort. I like hearing from and talking to people.
What did you do for work? When my daughter Laurie went to second grade, I went to work and I worked until I retired. I was basically a school social worker in Nassau County, L.I. I was at BOCES, Board of Cooperative Educational Services, a public school for emotionally disturbed children. It covered all the school districts in Nassau County that had difficult children. I worked there 35 years, until retirement.
Before that I was very active during World War II. Summers, when I was going to school, I worked in war factories. I was also in college in the war years. My three sisters and I all went to Hunter College. This was in the early 40s, when most women didn’t really go to college.
Do you have any favorite TV shows? I like cable TV, and some movies occasionally. I used to watch Turner Classics.
Favorite music? I like music from the 40s, when I was a teen and during the war years.
What did you want to be when you grew up? I wanted to be a social worker. My sisters all became teachers and everyone thought I would too, but I did social work. I just wanted to help humanity, my way.
Favorite color? Yellow.
Favorite food? Eggs. All kinds, or chicken wings. But I like a good egg salad.
What is your favorite thing about Newtown? My home. Maplewood has been very good to me.
Do you have a personal credo? Be a good, kind humanitarian. Tolerance is important.
