Newtown Underwater Search And Rescue (NUSAR) is a professionally trained all volunteer dive response team stationed in Sandy Hook.

Since 1989 NUSAR has provided emergency response for water based incidents in Newtown and the surrounding community of western Connecticut. The volunteer team members operate year-round and drill regularly, so they are always prepared.

The team responds to a variety of calls, including missing swimmers, submerged vehicles, boating incidents, injured hikers along the shore lines of local forest and parks, dry hydrant inspections for local fire departments, assists with evidence recovery for local police departments, and ice related incidents including those above and below the surface.

Although NUSAR receives vital funding from the Town for its operational budget, a majority of its funding for equipment purchases and maintenance, as well as training, comes from generous supporters of the team.

On Saturday, September 13, at Eichler’s Cove, NUSAR will conduct its fourth annual dive-a-thon. In addition to being an important fundraising event, the event is also an opportunity for the public to meet team members, tour vehicles and vessels, see equipment, and learn about NUSAR’s capabilities.

The event will be ongoing from 10 am until 2:30 pm. Members will be doing prolonged training, with divers continuously in the water doing practice search patterns, as would be used to locate missing objects and people. The public will be able to interact with team and divers and see firsthand how they operate.

For additional information visit NUSAR.org or call 203-270-4390.
