Cars Backed Into Each Other

Newtown Police report Gregory Nava, 22, of Bridgeport, operating a 2010 Honda Accord, was backing out of a parking spot in a lot on South Main Street at 3:32 pm August 18. Nicole Luna, 35, of Newtown, operating a 2025 Mazda xA, was backing out of a parking space in the same lot and the two vehicles backed into each other.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

No enforcement action was taken since the incident occurred on private property.

Burglary Charges

Newtown Police report that on August 28, Edgar Merejildo-Beato, 25, of Yonkers, N.Y., was taken into custody on an active warrant for his arrest. Merejildo-Beato was charged with first-degree burglary and criminal attempt at second-degree larceny.

The arrest is related to an incident that occurred on January 31.

Merejildo-Beato was held on a $100,000 court-set bond and scheduled to appear at Danbury Superior Court on August 29.

Conflicting Reports

Newtown Police report Joseph Maloney, 69, of Port Chester, N.Y., operating a 2018 Infiniti QX6, was traveling southbound on South Main Street in the right travel lane of two at 11:42 am September 7. Anthony Stafford, 25, of Redding, operating a 2024 Chevrolet Express, was traveling southbound on South Main Street in the left turn lane. The southbound lanes were merging together, and Maloney’s vehicle struck Stafford’s vehicle.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

No fault was assessed for this incident due to insufficient evidence and conflicting statements.

Hit Railroad Bridge

Newtown Police report Jamar Fagin, 42, of Fairfield, operating a 2019 International tractor trailer, was traveling eastbound on Botsford Hill Road at 9:44 am September 8. While traveling under the Housatonic Railroad Bridge, both smoke stacks made contact with the bridge.

No injuries were reported. The vehicle was not towed.

Fagin was issued an infraction for failure to obey signs and markings.

Collision In High School Lot

Newtown Police report Luke Gagnon, 16, of Sandy Hook, operating a 2013 Jeep Wrangler, was pulling into a parking spot in the lot of Newtown High School at 10:45 am September 8. While parking, he struck a 2011 Subaru Legacy owned by Curtis Urbina of Sandy Hook.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

No enforcement action was taken since the incident occurred on private property.

Friendly Gesture Causes Collision

Newtown Police report Claire Theune, 78, of Sandy Hook, operating a 2017 Subaru Forester, was waiting to turn left onto Country Club Road from South Main Street at 1:23 pm September 9. Nina Henriques, 23, of Newtown, operating a 2016 Buick Encore, was traveling southbound on South Main Street in the right lane of two. An uninvolved vehicle in the left southbound lane of South Main Street stopped to allow Theune to turn, and Theune began her turn without yielding to Henriques, and was struck by Henriques’ vehicle.

No injuries were reported. Theune’s vehicle was towed.

Theune was issued a written warning for making an improper turn.

Parking Lot Fender Bender

Newtown Police report Stephen Delgiudice, 60, of Sandy Hook, operating a 2024 Subaru Legacy, was parked in a lot on South Main Street at 10:30 am September 13. Jennifer Heitzke, 59, of Monroe, operating a 2022 Hyundai Tucson, was parked across from Delgiudice’s vehicle. Both vehicles began backing out at the same time and collided with each other.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

No enforcement action was taken since the incident occurred on private property.

DUI, Firearms Charges

Newtown Police report that officers responded to a report of a Jeep Wrangler being operated erratically in the area of South Main Street and Swamp Road on September 13. Officers located the Jeep and performed a traffic stop. The operator was identified as Antonio Morales, 48, of Brookfield. Morales was charged with operating an unregistered motor vehicle, illegal operation of a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs, failure to drive in the proper lane, failure to obey a stop sign, and illegally carrying firearms while under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Morales was issued a court date of September 24 in Danbury Superior Court after being released on a $1,000 bond.

Evading Operator

Newtown Police report that an unoccupied 2025 Honda Civic owned by Nicholas Hillman of Newtown was parked in a parking space of a lot on Covered Bridge Road during the evening on September 12. Hillman said he returned at approximately noon on September 13. Upon returning, Hillman discovered damage to his vehicle that was not present when he parked.

There were no cameras stationed at the lot where the incident occurred.

If the evading operator is identified, they will be charged with evading responsibility for causing property damage.

Rear Ended Motorcycle

Newtown Police report David Ramos, 47, of Danbury, operating a 2009 Hyundai Santa Fe, was traveling southbound on Main Street at 1:27 pm September 14. He was traveling behind a 2021 Harley Davidson FLHC operated by John Cooper, 74, of Trumbull. Cooper stopped for traffic and Ramos rear ended his motorcycle.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

Ramos was issued a verbal warning for following too close.
