Change Begins With Local Elections

To The Editor:

We have reached a new low in the march toward an authoritarian national government. Bringing the US government back to the high standards for which we were once revered, to a time when respect and dignity were our foundation, is essential. When the highest level of government is ruled by disrespect and disregard for the law, belittling, and vindictiveness — not to mention the muzzling of free speech and press — change must begin at the local level. Who we elect to fill seats in our town government must be those who will cut through nonsense to make sense of what best serves the many, not the few.

Newtown residents need leaders who will form decisions based on facts, who will take time to listen and respond to concerns in a timely manner.

People who believe that it is through thoughtful consideration that the best changes occur, are the leaders we need. No matter the board on which they serve, it is people suited to finding solutions who deserve your vote in November. Select town leaders who can be trusted to move Newtown forward in a manner that reflects the desires of its townspeople.

While once what went on nationally seemed distant from local politics, it is now a much shorter path from the White House to small communities like ours. It is a trickle down that could swiftly turn to a torrent of bad news for people here and across this country.

The Newtown Democratic Committee has put forth a slate of qualified candidates who will be the change we want in this town. Choose wisely. There is much to be lost when democracy is whittled away one small-town election at a time.
