Richard ‘Dick’ Kovacs
Richard Thomas Kovacs “Dick”, 87, of Newtown, away suddenly on October 8, 2025.
He was born in New Brunswick, N.J., on October 24, 1937, son of Michael and Theresa Bohar Kovacs, and raised by his grandmother, Katherine.
He was predeceased by his loving wife and partner in life of 59 years, Margaret. He was a beloved member of the Newtown community for over 48 years.
He is survived by his son, Thomas and his wife Maureen of Washington; his beloved daughter, Wanda McGarry of Danbury; and predeceased daughter Katherine Alice. He was an adoring grandfather to his granddaughters Samantha and Tierney. Richard is also survived by his brothers, King and his wife Claire, and Stephen of Hamilton, N.J.; a sister, Anna; and many nieces and nephews.
He was also predeceased by our beloved Henry Breese and Loretta Rivera.
Richard served in the US Air Force for 13 years with numerous tours to Southeast Asia, Vietnam, Europe, the Middle East, Japan, and Canada.
Richard and Margaret started Kovacs Construction Corporation in 1972. Dick’s strong work ethic, leadership, and deep commitment to public service defined much of his life. He was a longtime member of The Construction Institute and International Water Environment Federation. He enjoyed traveling with his wife Margaret across the US and to their favorite places, Bethany Beach, Delaware and St Maarten.
A man of deep community spirit, Richard was a volunteer for Newtown FISH, providing needed transportation for residents, and a longtime supporter of FAITH Food Pantry in Newtown. He was a proud member of Newtown Lions Club for over 30 years and served as president for two years. He was also involved with Scotty Fund, Danbury Hospital Development Fund, and Nunnawauk Meadows.
He was a faithful member of Newtown United Methodist Church, serving many positions throughout the years. Dick was known for his great sense of humor, magnetic personality, and gift for making people feel welcomed and uplifted. He was truly the life of every gathering. His warmth and kindness will be deeply missed by his family and all who knew him.
Calling hours were held on Thursday, October 16, from 4 to 7 pm, followed by the Newtown Lions Club ceremony at Honan Funeral Home, 58 Main Street in Newtown. A funeral service will be held at Newtown United Methodist Church, 92 Church Hill Road in Sandy Hook, on Friday, October 17, at 10 am, with burial to follow at Newtown Village Cemetery, 20 Elm Drive.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made in his memory to Newtown Lions Club or Newtown United Methodist Church.
