Passing On The Right
Newtown Police report Douglas McLaughlin, 61, of Southbury, operating a 2020 GMC Terrain, was traveling on Oakview Road at 7:16 am September 9. He stopped behind a 2017 Honda CR-V operated by Mark Sheridan, 52, of Newtown, who stopped at a stop sign at the intersection with Wasserman Way. Sheridan turned right onto Wasserman Way, and then McLaughlin turned right onto Wasserman Way along the passenger side of Sheridan’s vehicle. McLaughlin believed the fog line was a dividing line between lanes, and believed the “lanes” merged, striking Sheridan’s vehicle in the attempt.
No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.
McLaughlin was issued a verbal warning for passing on the right.
Failure To Obey Stop Sign
Newtown Police Report Tatumn Little, 25, of Naugatuck, operating a 2016 Honda CR-V, was turning right from Church Hill Road to travel northbound on Main Street during a heavy downpour of rain at 7:42 am October 8. Champa Paucar, 18, of Danbury, operating a 2011 Subaru Legacy, was traveling northbound on Main Street. Little struck Paucar’s vehicle.
Both operators were examined for injuries and released on the scene. Little’s vehicle was towed.
Little was issued a verbal warning for failure to obey a stop sign.
Struck Bridge
Newtown Police report William De’Angelo, 72, of Milford, operating a 2014 Ram Truck 3500, was traveling northbound on Botsford Hill Road at 11:18 am October 11. De’Angelo approached the bridge slowly, but the canopy of the vessel being towed struck the bridge.
No injuries were reported. The vehicle was not towed.
De’Angelo was issued a written warning for failure to obey posted height restrictions.
Collision In Parking Lot
Newtown Police report Anne Kelly, 61, of Oxford, operating a 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe, was pulling into a parking space at 5 Queen Street at 1:27 pm October 11. An unoccupied 2010 Ford Edge owned by Robert Rocco of Newtown was parked in an adjacent space. Kelly struck Rocco’s vehicle.
No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.
No enforcement action was taken since the incident occurred on private property.
Following Too Close
Newtown Police report Sarai Ramsay, 20, of Cortlandt Manor, N.Y., operating a 2009 Nissan VRS, was traveling south on South Main Street at 8:52 am October 13. Elizabeth Schwalbe, 42, of New Milford, operating a 2024 Volvo Xc60, was traveling on South Main Street ahead of Ramsay and stopped to allow a vehicle crossing the road to turn left out of Park Lane and onto South Main Street. Ramsay did not stop in time and rear ended Schwalbe’s vehicle.
No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.
Ramsay was issued an infraction for following too close.
Rear Ended On Hawleyville Road
Newtown Police report Julia Brennan, 21, of Newtown, operating a 2013 Hyundai Tucson, was traveling southbound on Hawleyville Road at the intersection with Mt Pleasant Road at 7:49 am October 14. Dominique Smith, 43, of Southbury, operating a 2019 Nissan Rogue, was traveling southbound on Hawleyville Road ahead of Brennan. Brennan accelerated before Smith began accelerating and struck the rear end of Smith’s vehicle.
No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.
Brennan was issued a written warning for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart.
Evading Responsibility Charge
Newtown Police report Kyle Hanna, 17, of Newtown, operating a 2006 Saab 93, was traveling on Taunton Lake Road at 9:57 pm October 14. Hanna lost control of the vehicle, leaving the roadway, and struck a utility pole. The vehicle left the scene and was later located by police.
No injuries were reported. The vehicle was not towed.
Hanna was charged with failure to drive in the proper lane and evading responsibility of a motor vehicle accident.
Resisting Arrest Charge
Newtown Police report that on October 16, officers traveled to a residence on Poverty Hollow Road to serve an arrest warrant on Robert Peschko, 49, of Newtown, for charges stemming from a prior investigation. Upon being notified of the warrant, he resisted officers and the charge of interfering with officers/resisting arrest was added to the charges of two counts of risk of injury to a minor and disorderly conduct. He was held on a $35,000 bond for a next day arraignment at Danbury Superior Court.
Assault Of Safety Officer Charge
Newtown Police report that on October 17, officers arrested Robert Peschko, 49, of Newtown, and charged him with violation of a protective order, assault of a public safety officer, and interfering with an officer.
Peshko was released on a $200,000 surety bond and given a court date of October 20 in Danbury Superior Court.
Larceny Charges
Newtown Police report on October 19, officers were dispatched to South Main Street for a health and welfare check, Dispatchers were informed that a man in a red sweat shirt and jeans had collapsed on the ground. While searching the area, officers were made aware that the man was hiding in nearby bushes. A witness told officers that the man was seen walking away from a nearby business carrying tools prior to hiding in the bushes.
The man was identified as William Ayala-Figueroa, 47, of Danbury. It was determined that Ayala-Figueroa stole the tools from the business. Ayala-Figueroa was arrested and charged with fifth-degree larceny.
He was released and given a court date of November 6 in Danbury Superior Court.
Left Driveway, Hit Car
Newtown Police report Sandra Orleman, 74, of Newtown, operating a 2014 Ram Truck 1500, was turning westbound from a driveway on Swamp Road at 5:44 pm October 20. Greg Morrison, 44, of Sandy Hook, operating a 2022 Tesla Model 3, was traveling eastbound on Swamp Road. Orleman struck Morrison’s vehicle.
No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.
Orleman was issued a verbal warning for failure to grant right of way at a private driveway.
