Elections Have Consequences XVIII
To The Editor:
If last Tuesday’s election results proved one thing it is that voters are willing to fight for Democracy. On October 18, 7 million peaceful protesters showed up to say no to Trump and his desire to be a king, 1200 of us gathered here in Newtown and not one of us was paid by George Soros to attend.
Trump did not get the message. Less than a week later he took a wrecking ball to the East Wing of the White House — the People’s House now his house? Gave $20 billion to his buddy in Argentina to help him keep his own job, cancelled the tunnel project between N.Y. and N.J. out of spite, threw a Great Gatsby party at Mar-a-Lago with some of his richest friends, while 42 million people were losing their SNAP benefits. In addition, he hit Canada with a 10% tariff because of a TV commercial, released 24 photos of his remodeling work on the Lincoln bathroom and bragged about his renovations on the Kennedy Center which is experiencing a record drop in ticket sales thanks to his great management skills.
If that was not enough, we found out that he is demanding that the Injustice Department hand him $230 million in compensation for what he claims it cost him to defend himself in the classified documents case. Note — none of the money used to defend him came out of his own pocket but you can be sure that is where the $230 million of taxpayer dollars will end up. Let’s not forget that he did in fact steal the documents.
Trump and his Project 2025 friends know that their policies are not popular, so they are taking steps to manipulate the mid-term elections to their advantage. In addition to their re-districting efforts, they will be attacking mail-in and early voting, increasing voter ID requirements and preparing military forces to stand by on election day in every state, just in case.
The Nov 4th elections across the country were a vote against authoritarianism and should be a wakeup call to Republicans who are in a tough spot — if they speak out against Trump, they risk a primary, if they stay silent, they are vulnerable in a general election. They have no one to blame but themselves. After Jan 6, 2021, they had the opportunity to starve the beast, instead they chose to feed it and now it is consuming them.
On October 18 we marched, on November 4, we voted.
