Clarifies Comments In Bee Article

To The Editor:

I would like to address comments that were attributed to me in the November 6th issue of The Newtown Bee.

The author(s) of the article titled “Walczak, Weimann Win; Dems Take 9-3 Council Supermajority” misquoted my remarks regarding next steps for Newtown’s newly elected First Selectman and how members of the Newtown Republican Town Committee should move forward. The article quoted me as saying, “Ruben encouraged NRTC members ‘to band together’ and ‘let Bruce know what he’s doing wrong.’” Important context was omitted.

After the words “to band together,” I had emphasized that it is easy to support one another when times are good, and that we must band together and lift each other up when results do not go our way. Similarly, following “let Bruce know what he’s doing wrong,” I noted my hope that residents who were critical of our current First Selectman would remain consistent with the incoming First Selectman and offer constructive feedback when they disagree.

This was a disappointing and untimely misrepresentation, especially given the political climate surrounding Newtown’s 2025 municipal elections. I am honored to have been re-elected and recognize the great privilege of serving on the Legislative Council. The fact that I received votes across party lines reinforces the trust that residents from all backgrounds have placed in me to represent them fairly and responsibly. To suggest I have any alternative motives is simply inaccurate.

Thank you to all who took the time to read this letter. I look forward to continuing my work on the Legislative Council and serving the people of Newtown with honesty and integrity.

Ben Ruben

Newtown Legislative Council District 3
