Newtown Historical Society Hosted Lecture About General Grant
On Sunday, November 16, Newtown Historical Society presented “General Grant: Leadership, Life, and Legacy.” The lecture was presented by local resident and Civil War historian Sal Camillieri at Newtown Senior Center. Camillieri is a lifelong Civil War buff who has studied critical aspects of the war in detail.
As noted by Newtown Historical Society, “Flawed yet formidable, Ulysses S. Grant was a commoner who became the Union’s greatest general, credited with saving a nation. His presidency brought both triumph and scandal, and yet he stood among the most celebrated figures of his time.”
Participants at the lecture noted that “Camillieri’s presentation was so informative. His depth of [knowledge] about General, and then President, Grant was eye opening.”
Another attendee said, “I was surprised to learn that such a brilliant military man as Grant was also such a terrible businessman,” and “This was really a worthwhile way to spend an afternoon. I learned so much about the Civil War.”
