Struck Amazon Delivery Truck
Newtown Police report Vanegas Fajardo, 19, of Danbury, operating a 2017 Honda Civic, was traveling westbound on Sugar Street at 8:34 pm December 7. He was traveling behind a 2024 Amazon delivery truck operated by Michael Hyman, 32, of Meriden. Hyman had pulled over to the side of the road with his hazard lights on, and Fajardo attempted to go around. Hyman pulled out across the roadway to enter a driveway on Sugar Street from the right side shoulder. Fajardo attempted to avoid by going around on the left, and struck Hyman’s vehicle front to passenger side.
Both drivers sustained injuries and were transported to Danbury Hospital. Both vehicles were towed.
No enforcement action is mentioned in the report.
Collision In Intersection
Newtown Police report Jeom Maeng, 72, of New Milford, operating a 2017 Honda Accord, was traveling on Hanover Road at 4:21 pm January 3. You Hin, 24, of Sandy Hook, operating a 2024 Toyota Camry, was in the intersection of Schoolhouse Hill Road and Hanover Road. Maeng entered the intersection and struck Hin’s vehicle.
No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.
Maeng was issued a written warning for failure to grant right of way at an intersection.
Unsafe Backing
Newtown Police report Tirrell Smith, 31, of Stamford, operating a 2019 Peterbilt 520, was traveling northbound on Key Rock Road at 2:28 pm January 9. Gabriel Jorquera, 31, of Bridgeport, operating a 2024 Audi Q5, was traveling behind Smith’s vehicle. Smith attempted to back up and the rear end of his vehicle struck Jorquera’s vehicle.
No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.
Smith was issued a verbal warning for unsafe backing.
Failure To Grant Right Of Way At Stop Sign
Newtown Police report that Isabella Brannon, 22, of Sandy Hook, operating a 2023 Kia Soul, was stopped at the intersection of Sugarloaf Road and Toddy Hill Road at 3:43 pm January 9. Kristi Svendsen, 46, of Sandy Hook, operating a 2017 Kia Sorento, was traveling south on Toddy Hill Road and was making a left turn onto Sugarloaf Road. Brannon’s vehicle pulled forward as Svendsen’s vehicle turned, striking the left rear quarter panel of Svendsen’s vehicle with the front of her car.
No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.
Brannon was issued a verbal warning for failure to grant right of way at a stop sign.
Struck Retaining Wall
Newtown Police report Reginald Davis, 61, of Center Valley, Penn., operating a 2015 Freightliner 1GR, was driving behind a building on Church Hill Road at 7:12 pm January 9. The vehicle struck a retaining wall.
No injuries were reported. The vehicle was not towed.
No enforcement action was taken since the incident occurred on private property.
Failure To Drive Reasonable Distance Apart
Newtown Police report Cevdet Uyar, 70, of Monroe, operating a 2011 Nissan Frontier, was traveling northbound on South Main Street at 7:46 am January 10. He was traveling behind a 2018 Jeep Wrangler operated by Dana Duffy, 58, of Hawthorne, N.Y., which was stopped at a red light. Uyar did not stop in time and rear-ended Duffy’s vehicle.
No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.
Uyar was issued an infraction for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart.
Following Too Close
Newtown Police report Stephen Mammola, 17, of Sandy Hook, operating a 2013 Honda Civic, was traveling eastbound on Berkshire Road at 7:39 am January 12. He was traveling behind a 2024 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter operated by Jonathan Peden, 36, of Norwalk. Peden stopped in traffic waiting to turn left onto Pole Bridge Road, and Mammola rear-ended Peden’s vehicle.
No injuries were reported. Mammola’s vehicle was towed.
Mammola was issued a verbal warning for following too close.
Car Went Off Roadway, Struck Tree
Newtown Police report Gloria Garcia-Valientes, 23, of Waterbury, operating a 2006 Toyota 4Runner, was traveling northbound on Boggs Hill Road at 2:28 pm January 12. Garcia-Valientes’ vehicle traveled across the double yellow lines, across the southbound travel lane, and off the west side of the roadway into a tree.
Garcia-Valientes sustained suspected minor injuries and was transported to Danbury Hospital. The vehicle was towed.
Garcia-Valientes was issued an infraction for operating a motor vehicle without a license and failure to drive right.
Turned In Front Of Car
Newtown Police report Joseph Praino, 83, of Oxford, operating a 2016 BMW X4, was traveling eastbound on Church Hill Road, in the shoulder, intending to turn right, at 4:10 pm January 12. Andrea Lee, 74, of Newtown, operating a 2021 Mazda CX-30, was also traveling eastbound on Church Hill Road in the travel lane. Lee turned in front of Praino’s vehicle and was struck.
No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.
No enforcement action was taken.
Struck Guardrail
Newtown Police report that Rickey Poteete, 49, of Ansonia, operating a 2016 Freightliner, struck a guardrail on Hattertown Road while trying to avoid a vehicle that crossed over the center line into its lane at 6:31 pm January 13. The guardrail sustained visible damage from the collision and, during vehicle recovery, had to be cut to free Poteete’s vehicle. Notification was made to Town of Newtown Highway Department regarding this damage to the guardrail.
No injuries were reported. Poteete’s vehicle was towed.
No enforcement action was taken.
Driving With Suspended Driver’s License
Newtown Police performed a traffic stop on Taron Foster, 25, of Bridgeport, after determining the plates did not match his car at 11:07 pm January 15. It was later determined that Foster was driving with a suspended driver’s license, no insurance, and an unregistered vehicle. Foster was charged with misuse of plates, operation under suspension, operating an unregistered vehicle, and failure to have insurance. He was released on a $500 bond and is scheduled to appear in Danbury Superior Court on January 28.
Struck Mailbox, Then Utility Pole
Newtown Police report that Clayton Rodrigues Peixim, 43, of Danbury, operating a 2013 Ford Taurus, was traveling northbound on Toddy Hill Road at 4:43 am January 17. Peixim’s vehicle ran of the roadway to the right and struck a mailbox on Toddy Hill Road. Peixim’s vehicle then struck a utility pole before coming to a stop.
No injuries were reported. Peixim’s vehicle was towed.
Peixim was issued a misdemeanor summons for operating a motor vehicle while suspended and traveling too fast for conditions.
Struck Stop Sign
Newtown Police report that Deon Lopes, 20, of Shelton, operating a 2006 Honda Accord, turned right entering the northbound entrance of 31 Pecks Lane at 7:25 am January 17. Lopes lost control of his vehicle due to the snow in the driveway, traveled across the driveway, and struck a stop sign.
No injuries were reported. The vehicle was not towed.
No enforcement action was taken since the incident occurred on private property.
Chevrolet Versus Toyota
Newtown Police report that Cory Beardsley, 40, of Shelton, operating a 2015 Chevrolet Silverado, was traveling eastbound on Hawleyville Road at 12:12 pm January 17. Ulices Sosa, 29, of Shelton, operating a 2021 Toyota Tacoma, was traveling westbound on Hawleyville Road. Sosa was negotiating a curve right when Beardsley’s vehicle began to slide into the westbound lane. Beardsley’s vehicle then crossed the double yellow line into the westbound lane, and the driver side front bumper of his vehicle struck the rear driver side area of Sosa’s vehicle.
No injuries were reported. Sosa’s vehicle was towed.
Beardsley was issued a verbal warning for failure to maintain lane.
Traveling Too Fast, Hit Utility Pole
Newtown Police report that David Simpson, 19, of New Milford, operating a 2002 Toyota Camry, was traveling northbound on Currituck Road in the area of Brennan Road at 12:26 pm January 17. While Simpson was negotiating a curve in the roadway, his vehicle traveled off the northbound shoulder and struck a utility pole along the shoulder of the road. The roads were slippery and covered in snow at the time of collision.
No injuries were reported. The vehicle was not towed.
Simpson was issued a verbal warning for traveling too fast for conditions.
Failure To Maintain Lane
Newtown Police report that Bianco Nesello, 34, of Naugatuck, operating a 2020 Honda HRV, was traveling westbound on Hawleyville Road at 12:41 pm January 17. Jennifer Miller, 51, of Brookfield, operating a 2022 Acura MDX, was stopped in traffic facing eastbound. Nesello’s vehicle then began to cross the double yellow line into the eastbound lane, where the front of her vehicle struck the front of Miller’s vehicle.
No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.
Nesello was issued a verbal warning for failure to maintain lane.
Following Too Close
Newtown Police report that Caroline Daria, 26, of Stratford, operating a 2021 Hyundai Venue, was traveling southbound on Pole Bridge Road behind Kristen Keil, 46, of Newtown, operating a 2011 Ford Fusion, at 1:21 pm January 17.
Keil’s vehicle stopped for the stop sign at the intersection of Berkshire Road. Due to the icy, snow-covered roadway, Daria’s vehicle was unable to stop in time. The front of Daria’s vehicle made contact with the rear of Keil’s vehicle, causing minor damage to both vehicles.
No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.
Daria was issued a verbal warning for following too close causing a motor vehicle accident.
Jeep Versus Ford
Newtown Police report that Rahmat Abdulhamid, 58, of Norwalk, operating a 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee, was traveling southbound on Hanover Road behind Raymond Baldwin, 48, of Trumbull, operating a 2025 Ford Bronco, at 1:44 pm January 17. Baldwin’s vehicle slowed to make a right turn in the area of Anthony Ridge Road. Due to the snow-covered roadway, Abdulhamid’s vehicle was unable to stop and hit the rear of Baldwin’s vehicle.
No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.
Abdulhamid was issued a verbal warning for following too close causing a motor vehicle accident.
Traveling Too Fast For Conditions
Newtown Police report that Cameron Heard, 17, of Newtown, operating a 2016 BMW X5, was traveling northbound on Orchard Hill Road in the area of Shamrock Lane at 2:43 pm January 17. Scott Tompkins, 59, of Newtown, operating a 2021 Volvo XC60, was traveling southbound on Orchard Hill Road. As Heard was negotiating a curve in the roadway, his vehicle crossed into the southbound lane due to the snow-covered roadway. The driver side of Heard’s vehicle hit the driver’s side of Tompkins’ vehicle, causing minor damage to both vehicles. In an attempt to avoid Heard’s vehicle, Tompkins’ vehicle then traveled off the southbound shoulder.
No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.
Heard was issued a verbal warning for traveling too fast for conditions.
Read-Ended Due To Icy Conditions
Newtown Police report that Tristan Filiato, 25, of Newtown, operating a 2012 Subaru Forester, was navigating towards the exit of the Stop & Shop parking lot on South Main Street at 4:43 pm January 17. Glen Oliwa, 49, of Shelton, operating a 2018 Hyundai Tucson SE, was stopped at a traffic light in the parking lot’s exit, waiting for the light to turn and exit onto South Main Street. Filiato’s vehicle drove up behind Oliwa’s vehicle and slid in the slushy, icy conditions of the parking lot. Filiato’s vehicle then rear-ended Oliwa’s vehicle, which was still waiting for the light.
No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.
No enforcement action was taken since the incident occurred on private property.
Lost Control On Ice- Covered Roadway
Newtown Police report James McMahon, 19, of Bridgewater, operating a 2021 Tesla Model Y, was traveling southbound on Obtuse Road in the southbound travel lane at 5:35 pm January 17. McMahon stated that, as he was negotiating a left-hand curve, he lost control of his vehicle on the snow and ice covered surface of the roadway. The vehicle subsequently ran off the roadway to McMahon’s right and became disabled on a dirt embankment.
No injuries were reported. The vehicle was not towed.
Newtown Police determined the accident was unavoidable due to the roadway’s surface being covered in snow and ice, and the roadway itself being a downhill slope which curved to the left. No enforcement action was taken.
Plow Struck Stationary Vehicle
Newtown Police report that Ricardo de Avelar Ribeiro, 56, of Danbury, operating a 2015 Ford F-350 Super Duty, was traveling in the westbound lane of Plumtrees Road at 5:49 pm January 17. Jovan Cartagena, 33, of Bridgeport, operating a 2022 Ford, was parked in the eastbound lane of Plumtrees Road, near the intersection of Plumtrees Road and Wild Cat Road, delivering a package. As Ribeiro drove westbound, the plow attached to the front of his vehicle struck the rear driver’s side quarter panel of Cartagena’s car.
No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.
No enforcement action was taken.
Hit Support Wires
Newtown Police report Miranda Vanhoose, 29, of Milford, operating a 2019 Ford EcoSport SE, was traveling northwest on Walnut Tree Hill Road just north of Shady Rest Boulevard at 7:40 pm January 17. Vanhoose stated that as she passed by the intersection of Shady Rest Boulevard, she lost control of her vehicle on the snow and ice covered surface of the roadway. Vanhoose’s vehicle ran off of the roadway to her right and struck support wires for a utility pole with its front end.
No injuries were reported. Vanhoose’s vehicle was towed.
Vanhoose was issued a misdemeanor summons for the following: operating under suspension, operating an unregistered motor vehicle, and failure to maintain proper lane of travel.
Struck Two Stone Walls
Newtown Police report Nancy Chung, 22, of Sandy Hook, operating a 2020 Hyundai Tucson Limited, was traveling eastbound on Schoolhouse Hill Road and negotiating a left turn on a snow covered road at 11:41 am January 18. Chung’s vehicle ran off the roadway to the right, struck a stone wall along Schoolhouse Hill Road, then crossed over the roadway to the left and struck the stone across the street.
No injuries were reported. Chung’s vehicle was towed.
Chung was issued an infraction for traveling too fast for conditions.
