Family: My wife Kathy, we’ve been married going on 17 years; and we have four boys, George, age 5; Henry, 7; James, 11; and Charlie, 13.

How did you meet your wife? We were in the same college class, but actually only formally met while I was in graduate school and she had taken a job after college though an alumni connection when we were both in Nashville. I was able to persuade her to come back to my home state of Connecticut afterwards, where we have settled down and remained ever since.

How long have you lived in Newtown? Nine years-plus. It’ll be ten years in October.

Work: I grew up in Connecticut, and after living out of state for college and law school, came back to practice defense litigation here and in New York. I did that for about a decade, until shifting gears three years ago to do housing policy work. It’s about trying to find ways to ensure that everyone, no matter what their age or situation in life, can find a decent place to live that’s not too far from their workplace and is within their budget, at a time when that’s been challenging for many people, particularly here in Connecticut and surrounding states.

Are you a member of any local organizations, clubs, and/or communities of faith? My family attends Christ the Redeemer Church in Southbury, and I’ve been active on various boards and commissions in town over the years. I am currently on the Planning & Zoning Commission as an alternate.

What do you enjoy doing in your free time? When I have some time here or there, which is not quite as often as I’d like, I try to get out on our local tennis courts. I also take advantage of some of the hiking trails in state parks. We’re lucky to have one that’s just down the road from us, the Lower Paugussett, where you can go nearly all the way down to the river. Otherwise I enjoy spending time with my family and the boys, watching them pursue their own interests in sports and other activities that they’ve taken up. It looks like we have a very busy spring ahead of us.

What is the greatest piece of advice you’ve ever been given? To me, advice is most helpful when it’s situational rather than in aphorisms. In terms of the specific advice with the greatest positive impact on my life, it would probably be the direction my parents pointed me in with my college choices, which would begin the series of events that would lead to meeting Kathy, starting a family, and moving to Newtown. It would be difficult to top that one, I think.

What was the most recent concert you went to? My wife and I go to shows when we can. The last one we went to was the Outlaw Music Festival, at the Xfinity in September, with Willie Nelson, Bob Dylan, and Cheryl Crow, so you had all eras of music represented going back to the 1950s.

Favorite musical performer? Bob Dylan is probably the performer whose shows I’ve seen the most. My wife and I kind of connected over Dylan’s music. We were both fans when we were in college and afterwards, and so whenever he’s in town or relatively close we try to catch a show and relive those early days. We always go to shows together, partly because we enjoy the performance but partly because it’s one of the things we bonded doing.

Even before we were married, before we were engaged, one of the first shows we went to when we were both living in Nashville was a Dylan show at Ryman Auditorium in downtown Nashville. We saw some other legendary performers there too — those were some of the first times we were together, so whenever anybody from that era is around, we make a point to go see them.

What was the most recent book you’ve read? Scouting and Scoring, from a few years ago. It’s about intuition and data in baseball, historically and up to the present day. I recommend it to anybody who’s interested in baseball, and I think there’s also general interest in showing how the sport pioneered some of the ways we think about data science and measuring performance today.

Favorite color? Blue, no yellow!

What did you want to be when you grew up? I had no clue whatsoever.

Favorite food? Stick-to-your-ribs American classics.

What is your favorite thing about Newtown? There’s so many things my family and I have really come to love about this town that have kept us here for going on ten years. Some of those would include the many friends and connections we’ve made here, and how a town with tens of thousands of people nonetheless feels like you’re always running into people you know, day to day, and that’s something I really appreciate. It makes the town feel like home.

There’s also great schools and facilities, wonderful parks that we’re fortunate to have, and the incredible number of volunteers and volunteer organizations that put so much time into keeping the town running well.

Do you have a personal credo? I was so much older then, I’m younger than that now!
