Newtown High School’s basketball teams were eliminated in first-round Division II State Tournament games on the road. In both instances the Nighthawks were the No 18 seed and fell to No 15 opponents — the boys 69-59 to Glastonbury on March 6 and the girls 46-26 to West Haven on March 7.

The girls had lost to West Haven in the regular-season finale and could not turn the tables on their familiar counterparts. The boys had a 34-30 halftime lead before Glastonbury battled back. Aidan Walker led the Nighthawks with 26 points, James Glynn had 13, and Luke Stewart and Quinn Velez had six points apiece.

This was a winning season overall for both lineups. The girls were 13-7 in the regular slate, the boys 12-8. Both teams will lose key players to graduation — eight boys and six girls will leave shoes to fill.

“Unfortunately, most seasons end in a loss. We played a good team, on the road, and came up short,” NHS boys’ Coach Matt Murphy said. “Very proud of our seniors. A wonderful group of young men that we were lucky to have the opportunity to work with. They should be proud of the standard that they have set for their younger teammates.”
