Slid On Snow Into Snowbank

Newtown Police report Fetie Fazliu, 46, of Sandy Hook, operating a 2019 Audi A7, was traveling southbound on Old Green Road at 7:32 am February 26. While traveling downhill and negotiating a curve in the roadway, Fazliu lost control of the vehicle due to slippery road conditions and went off the roadway left, into a snowbank.

No injuries were reported. The vehicle was not towed.

Fazliu was issued a verbal warning for traveling too fast for conditions.

Struck Mailbox, Trees

Newtown Police report Jenny Penaranda-Valverde, 32, of Brookfield, operating a 2002 Honda CR-V, was traveling westbound on Mt Pleasant Road at 6:34 pm March 3. Penaranda-Valverde lost control of the vehicle, which crossed the double yellow line and went off the roadway on the eastbound side, where it struck a mailbox and several pine trees, and overturned approximately 25 feet off the roadway.

No injuries were reported. The vehicle was towed.

Penaranda-Valverde was issued an infraction for traveling too fast for conditions.

Cadillac Strikes Ram Truck

Newtown Police report Jamie Mack, 37, of Bridgeport, operating a 2010 Cadillac CFS, was traveling northbound on South Main Street at 2:05 pm March 4. Maxwell Zargo, 32, of Brookfield, operating a 2014 Ram Truck 1500, was traveling southbound on South Main Street. Mack attempted to turn left into a driveway and struck Zargo’s vehicle.

Mack was transported to Danbury Hospital for possible injuries. Both vehicles were towed.

The incident is still under investigation.

Forgery, Attempted Larceny Charges

Newtown Police report that on March 4, Melissa Hill, 40, of Newtown, was taken into custody on an active warrant for her arrest. Hill was charged with two counts of criminal attempt at third-degree larceny and two counts of third-degree forgery.

The arrest stems from a complaint in March 2025 in which Hill allegedly took checks from a Newtown resident and attempted to cash them.

Hill was released on a $10,000 bond with a court date of March 18 in Danbury Superior Court.

Unregistered Vehicle Infraction

Newtown Police report Justine Lee, 76, of Danbury, operating a 2007 Mazda 6, was stopped facing westbound on Haley Lane at the intersection with Walnut Tree Hill Road at 6:10 pm March 9. Matthew McGovern, 29, of Sandy Hook, operating a 2024 Mazda CX-5, was traveling southbound on Walnut Tree Hill Road. Lee attempted to turn left onto Walnut Tree Hill Road and struck McGovern’s vehicle.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

Lee was issued an infraction for operating an unregistered vehicle.

Following Too Close

Newtown Police report Richard Paloian, 60, of Sandy Hook, operating a 2023 Ford F350, was traveling westbound on Riverside Road at 9:52 am March 10. He was traveling behind a 1994 Chevrolet Corvette operated by Sara Snellman, 23, of Newtown. Snellman stopped at the intersection with Glen Road, and Paloian rear-ended her vehicle.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

Paloian was issued a verbal warning for following too close.

Sandy Hook Volunteer Fire & Rescue, Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps, a paramedic, and Newtown Police Department all responded to the area of 100 Wasserman Way around 1:45 pm Sunday, March 8, following a rollover there. According to the Newtown PD report, a 2012 Ford F550 being operated by Pieritalo Bauchiero, 67, of Torrington, began negotiating a left-hand turn east of Nunnawauk Road. The truck hydroplaned in a large puddle of water, and Bauchiero lost control of the vehicle. It slid across the road into the oncoming lane, striking a guardrail before overturning and coming to rest on its roof. Bauchiero and a 79-year-old male were both able to self-extricate. Bauchiero was reportedly uninjured. The passenger was checked for suspected minor injuries, and declined transport to the hospital. DEEP responded for fluids leaking on the road near waterways, Eversource responded for a damaged utility pole, and CT DOT responded for the damaged guardrail. The collision fully closed Wasserman between its intersections with Oakview and Nunnawauk Roads for three hours. Bauchiero was issued an infraction for traveling too fast for conditions and failure to drive in the proper lane. —Bee Photo, Hicks
