To The Editor:

In a time when so much feels temporary, a lifelong friendship built right here in Newtown reminds us what truly lasts.

For the past 11 years, Leticia DeOliveira and Isabela Walder have stood side by side — not just as teammates, but as lifelong friends. Their friendship began in kindergarten, and by second grade, they had already started their journey together in the Newtown youth cheer program.

What began as two little girls learning routines and wearing bows grew into something much bigger. Over the years, they became demonstrators for Newtown Youth Football and Cheer, helping guide younger athletes and giving back to the same program that shaped them.

As they entered high school, they continued to grow — not only as athletes, but as leaders. They became cheerleaders, DEMs, and eventually captains, leading by example and supporting their team through every challenge and success.

Their journey recently came full circle at the New England Championship — a moment that reflects more than a single season, but over a decade of dedication, resilience, and growth.

But what makes their story truly special is not just the titles or accomplishments.

It is the consistency, the loyalty, and the bond they built over the years. In a time when so much is temporary, their lifelong friendship stands as something rare and meaningful.

They represent what youth programs can build, what community can nurture, and what leadership truly looks like.

As they close this chapter of their senior year, they leave behind a legacy of dedication, friendship, and character that will last far beyond the mat.

Some stories are about winning — but this one is about everything they became along the way.
