Connecticut Premiere Of ‘Communion’ To Be Hosted By Trinity Church
All are invited to join Trinity Episcopal Church for the Connecticut premiere of Communion, the true story of Connecticut native Matthew LaBanca, a gay Catholic school teacher who was fired after marrying his husband.
Adapted from the sold-out off-Broadway musical at Nancy Manocherian’s Cell Theatre, the film engages audiences in thoughtful conversation about faith, conscience, and LGBTQ+ inclusion.
“ Communion opens a sacred conversation about belonging and love in the Church,” said Andrea Castner Wyatt, rector of Trinity Episcopal Church. “Stories like Matthew’s invite all of us to reflect on how faith can be a source of hope, compassion, and community — especially for those who have been marginalized.”
Communion has been presented in theaters and faith communities across the nation. Rather than debating doctrine, it explores human experience, inviting viewers to reflect on spiritual integrity, love, and the challenges LGBTQ+ people face within religious institutions.
A New Fairfield native, LaBanca has performed in over 50 Broadway, off-Broadway, and regional productions, including Young Frankenstein, Anything Goes, The King and I, and A Christmas Carol. He holds degrees in vocal performance and music education from University of Connecticut.
His TV credits include Broad City, Live from Lincoln Center, Severance, and the upcoming Hulu series The Spot starring Claire Danes and Ewan McGregor.
LaBanca continues to teach, perform, and inspire, blending artistry with advocacy.
The screening at Trinity Church is free and open to the public. A talk-back with the filmmaker and reception will follow, offering an opportunity for community dialogue. All are welcome, particularly families, educators, and those who care about LGBTQ+ inclusion and the spiritual well-being of all parishioners.
