Two Injured After Military Vehicle Goes Off I-84, Rolls Down Hill
Two men received minor injuries and a local road was closed for a few hours on Sunday after a 2008 Light Medium Tactical Vehicle they were traveling in went off the interstate late that morning and partially rolled down an embankment.
CT State Police report a 2008 BAE Systems LMTV was traveling on I-84 West, approaching Exit 9, around 10:52 am Sunday, April 19. Alex K. Munyua, 27, of Worcester, Mass., was operating the vehicle in the right lane of two. Munyua lost control of the vehicle, which swerved to the right and struck the right shoulder metal beam guide rail. The LMTV then went down the embankment and rolled onto its passenger side.
A 23-year-old male from Derby was the sole passenger in the vehicle.
Both men were wearing shoulder-lap belts. Both were reportedly transported to the hospital.
The vehicle is owned by Connecticut National Guard.
The incident was initially reported as a military tanker rollover with extrication. Newtown Hook & Ladder Co #1, Sandy Hook Volunteer Fire & Rescue Company, Hawleyville Fire Rescue, Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps, and a paramedic were all dispatched.
Sandy Hook firefighters were held at their station.
The vehicle came to rest midway down the hill that runs between the interstate and Barnabas Road. First responders operated on both roadways during the incident.
Modzelewski’s Towing was also called to the scene. The incident slowed traffic on the interstate while crews worked there. Barnabas Road was closed for three hours, until just prior to 2 pm, while the vehicle was removed from the hill.
Additional details concerning the incident were unavailable.
