Newtown Hook & Ladder firefighter Joe Corbo soaks part of the northern property at 1 Whippoorwill Hill Road Friday afternoon, April 24. Firefighters from Hook & Ladder and Hawleyville were dispatched to the home at the corner of Whippoorwill Hill and Mt Pleasant roads around 2:15 pm for the reported fire there. They were able to quickly knock down the fire, but not before it came within yards of the home and at least one shed. Connecticut’s spring brush fire season generally runs mid-March through May, after snow melts but trees remain bare. The warm spring sun, which is generally hotter than in the winter, can quickly heat up the ground and create fires. CT DEEP reminds residents that grasses, twigs, and very small branches are “one-hour fuel,” meaning even if they are initially damp, these items can be ready to burn within an hour if the sun comes out and a breeze picks up. —Bee Photos, Hicks
Newtown Hook & Ladder firefighter Rachael Gindraux also douses part of the brush fire behind the home at 1 Whippoorwill Hill Road on April 24. CT DEEP cautions that while brush fires cause little long-term damage to forests, they do burn the surface and can spread very fast.
