To The Editor:

Michelle Embree Ku has advocated with integrity and accountability for all community members for over a decade, and recent denigrating suggestions that she supports or tolerates homophobia, Latino stereotyping, and youth scapegoating are preposterous — they appear to be an underhanded tactic to disparage her before the upcoming May 26 Democratic Town Committee Caucus.

Anyone familiar with Michelle and her many years of steadfast and varied community-building work in Newtown knows these claims are false. Michelle has been a leader in the fight against book banning, including against banning “Flamer,” which is an affirming LGBTQIA novel. She spoke at multiple rallies and meetings in support of the LGBTQIA community and against bans in this fight. Michelle played a key role advocating for a district diversity, equity and inclusion coordinator; and she has consistently worked for inclusion in our schools, in Newtown and beyond. She has worked for years to promote a more supportive, multicultural community in Newtown. I encourage you to take the time to talk with Michelle rather than assume what you read is true.

Many may not be aware that we need Michelle’s supporters in District 106 to show up in person at the Caucus on May 26 to vote for her to win the nomination — we don’t just need you in November! Check-in for registered Democrats in District 106 begins at 5:30 p.m. in the Newtown Middle School auditorium for the 6 p.m. start time. Voting will likely begin soon after 6, so please arrive by 6 and join me in supporting Michelle Embree Ku to be the DTC-endorsed candidate!
