Discusses Budget Reductions

To The Editor:

The so-called “cuts” approved by the Legislative Council this week were not substantive “cuts” at all — just small reductions to the $5,800,000 in increases to the previous budget referendum which failed.

As a member of the Legislative Council, I would like to provide additional context regarding the Council’s recent budget votes. The reductions approved — $471,000 from the town municipal budget and $400,000 from the school budget were not actual cuts, but rather reductions to proposed spending increases. Even after those adjustments, the combined town budget of $146,543,954 would still increase overall spending by $4,900,000, a 3.48% increase over last year, resulting in a 1.96% tax increase.

There has also been discussion about Republican votes on the school budget. The issue was not whether to reduce spending, but whether the proposed reductions were sufficient to address voters’ concerns. We voted against the motions because reducing the $96,000,000 school budget by $700,000, then $550,000, and then the approved $400,000, did not go far enough to ease the burden on taxpayers. With enrollment declining from 4,554 students ten years ago to 3,967 today, the school budget increases should be limited to the $3,088,436 needed for contracted personnel, operating expenses, and other mandatory contractual and statutory costs. We all want the best education for our students, and strong schools are vital to our town, but responsible government requires balancing educational priorities with the financial reality that spending increases must remain modest.

The referendum outcome demonstrated that town residents believe the current trajectory of spending and taxation is not sustainable. The revised budget still adds close to $5,000,000 in additional spending. I believe the Legislative Council should have returned with a budget that better reflects the message voters delivered and provides more substantial relief for taxpayers. Families, seniors, and long-time homeowners are feeling the strain of rising taxes and increasing costs. Voters asked for meaningful restraint, and the revised school budget still falls short.

My comments are my own and not of the Legislative Council of which I am an elected member.
