No-Hitter! Addy Cordova Pitches Nighthawks Into Championship Game
MONROE — Pitcher Addy Cordova dominated the same New Milford High School bats that put up a ten spot in the regular season when the teams had a rematch on May 26.
How dominant?
This time, when her No. 5 Newtown softball team faced the top-seeded Green Wave in the South-West Conference Tournament semifinals at neutral site Masuk, Cordova threw a no-hitter, lifting the Nighthawks to a 1-0 win.
The Hawks pulled off the upset behind that stellar pitching, some strong fielding, and a first-inning run as Cordova reached on an error and later scored on another Green Wave fielding miscue. The dual threat also lined a single and laced a double but was left stranded both times in this pitcher's duel.
Cordova both attributed the turnaround against the usually potent New Milford bats to a combination of an improved pitching performance and the defense behind her. Third baseman Gillian Boughan snared a hot-shot liner headed down the third base line and turned it into an out. Most of the other plays were pretty routine but, nonetheless, had to be made.
"I think our fielding was really good," Cordova said. "And I think I pitched a lot better. I hit my spots."
The pitcher mixed her rise, curve, and changeup to keep the Wave batters off balance. With Newtown the visiting team, batting first and scoing before New Milford came to bat, Cordova pitched with a lead — albeit a slim one — from the get go.
"Going in with a run was really nice," she said.
Cordova hit one batter and worked around a leadoff error in the sixth. She intentionally walked a batter with one out in that sixth inning, the only free pass Cordova issued as her command was on from start to finish. She ended the game with three fly ball outs.
"Unbelievable — a lot of resiliency this week and extremely efficient," NHS Coach Megan Goyda said. "Noting fazes her"
Goyda was impressed with the entire team.
"I'm proud of them to come into a game having lost the way we did last time. They really flipped the switch," the coach said.
The Hawks advance to the championship game to be held Thursday, May 28 (details to be announced).
