For those who tuned in early enough to see player introductions when the United States’ men's soccer team defeated Australia 2-0 in World Cup action at Seattle Stadium on June 19, they may just have seen someone from Newtown.

Joshua Keogler, 11, had the unique opportunity to walk out of the tunnel with Team USA and was first in line, paired with team captain Tim Ream.

Quaker and Lay’s (both part of PepsiCo, where Joshua's dad Ryan works) are sponsors of the World Cup and received access to the Player Escort Program for some of the games. Employees had the opportunity to enter their children into a lottery to participate in the program, and Joshua was chosen. It was luck of the draw that the young soccer fan got to attend a US game.

His favorite part of the experience was standing on the field during the National Anthem and hearing more than 65,000 fans sing at the top of their lungs while holding all their banners and flags.

Joshua just finished fifth grade. He is home-schooled and plays for Newtown Travel Soccer. The sport runs in the family; Ryan played soccer in town throughout his childhood and through high school.

"Watching him step onto the field beside Team USA in front of a packed stadium was an unforgettable experience for our whole family. It was truly one of those moments we'll cherish forever — a dream come true and an incredible memory that Joshua will carry with him for the rest of his life," Ryan said.
