Several organizations and foundations around Newtown offer different kinds of programs that promote healthy living and mindfulness.

C.H. Booth Library, 25 Main Street, hosts a wide variety of programs that range from teaching about America’s beginnings to spending time with furry, four-legged therapy dogs. The next therapy dogs visit will be on Tuesday, September 15, 6-7 pm in the Periodicals Room. Attendees are encouraged to stop by the library to pet and read to Exceptional Sidekick Therapy Dogs for a few minutes. Registration is appreciated, but not required, and drop-ins are welcome.

Immediately following the visit, attendees can hop onto an online lecture, “Celebrate the Fall Harvest by Prioritizing Self-Care,” led by motivational speaker Constance Hallinan Lagan.

Lagan argues that “self-care is not selfish.” Prioritizing one’s well-being allows people to offer the best version of themselves to the world. Lagan adds, “All around us we observe the worst versions of our leaders and wonder what we can do to negate the ills of our universe. By prioritizing our own self-care and working to become the best version of ourselves, we become a mini ‘Poison Control Center,’ an antidote to a world that has turned upside down. Self-care is a gift to the universe; self-neglect is a menace to the universe.”

The webinar will include a lecture with a Q&A to follow. Registration is required for online access. Registration for this program and the therapy dogs visit can be completed by going to chboothlibrary.org.

Catherine Violet Hubbard Animal Sanctuary also offers unique opportunities to practice healthy habits. Goat Yoga is one of these unique opportunities. Goats from Bradley Mountain Farm will join humans in their yoga session led by Heather Morgado of YogaSpace. Morgado will lead attendees through gentle movement and mindful breathing while goats explore and play. Attendees should wear comfortable clothing and bring a towel for their yoga mats. Classes are $35 and attendees must be 10 or older on the day of the event.

Goat Yoga is being offered on Saturday, September 12. There are two sessions — the first session is from noon-12:50 pm and the second is from 1-1:50 pm. Registration is required and can be completed by visiting cvhfoundation.org.
