Town & Country Garden Club will open its 2026-27 season with a special program, “Garden Design for Year-Round Beauty, Comfort and Ecology,” on Wednesday, September 9, at 7 pm. The program will be held at Newtown Senior Center, 8 Simpson Street. Admission is free and open to the public.

Landscape expert Dan Holmes will lead an engaging discussion on the principles of garden design, using examples from local projects as well as well-known gardens to illustrate how thoughtful design can transform any landscape.

Holmes will explore the importance of scale, unity, rhythm, texture, and focal points in creating visual harmony. Attendees will learn how these principles can be applied to landscapes of all sizes, including their own backyards.

The program will also focus on making the most of resources already available on a property. Holmes will discuss ways gardeners can work with their existing landscapes to create attractive, functional spaces while gaining the confidence to turn long-considered ideas into reality.

At the heart of the presentation is the idea that every landscape — whether a private garden, public space, or even an overlooked corner — can benefit from thoughtful care and attention from those who serve as its gardening stewards.

Dan Holmes founded Holmes Fine Gardens (HFG) in 2002 and has more than 25 years of experience in landscape design and horticulture. He holds a BS in Ornamental Horticulture and Landscape Design from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, California. He is also a founding member of Newtown Earth Day Festival and remains actively involved in the organization.

Town & Country Garden Club welcomes both longtime gardeners and those simply interested in learning more about gardening and landscape design. The September 9 program offers an opportunity to gain practical ideas, inspiration, and a fresh perspective on creating beautiful and ecologically thoughtful outdoor spaces.
