To The Editor:

I have been an instructor in the Adult Continuing Education program for decades and signed a contract to continue this school year. Yet neither I nor, as far as I am aware, returning students received the basic courtesy of being notified that all the programs were being discontinued. Instructors who have already made a commitment to prepare classes, reserve time on their calendars, and, in some cases, turn away other opportunities because they have been contracted to teach. And the students who have invested their time, energy, and trust in these programs. This shows how little regard was given to the people directly affected by the Board of Education’s decision.

Adult Continuing Ed isn’t just a line item on a budget. Nor is it some meaningless extracurricular activity. These classes provide opportunities for adults to learn, explore new interests, improve their health and well-being, develop skills, connect with other members of the community, and continue growing long after their formal education has ended.

If the Board had to make a difficult financial decision, then say so. If enrollment numbers were insufficient, explain that. If there were budgetary constraints, tell the public. No one is suggesting that every program must continue forever. Boards have to make choices about how resources are allocated. But HOW those decisions are communicated matters.

A simple email or phone call to instructors who were already contracted to teach and to students who had participated in or registered for these programs would have demonstrated basic courtesy & respect. Instead, many of us were left to find out indirectly. Is this how we want our Board of Education to conduct business? Transparency doesn't cost anything. Neither does common courtesy. Frankly, it’s not a good look for a public institution whose responsibility includes serving and communicating with the community.

On a positive note, I wish to thank Newtown Park & Rec for taking my classes under their wing. My yoga students and I are very grateful for your support.
