Improper Turn
Newtown Police report Adriana Gomes, 45, of Lacey, Wash., operating a 2026 Mitsubishi Outlander, was traveling southbound on Hattertown Road at 4:32 pm August 31. Olivia Verdi, 17, of Newtown, operating a 2021 Jeep Wrangler, was traveling westbound on Boggs Hill Road and came to a stop for the stop sign at the intersection with Hattertown Road. Gomes' vehicle attempted to turn left onto Boggs Hill Road and struck Verdi's vehicle.
No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.
Gomes was issued an infraction for making an improper turn.
Hyundai Hits Honda
Newtown Police report Rafael Espinal, 56, of Naugatuck, operating a 2013 Hyundai Elantra, was traveling northbound on Elm Drive at 7:45 am September 1. Richard Briggs, 30, of Newtown, operating a 2010 Honda Civic, was traveling eastbound on Sugar Street. Espinal entered the intersection of Elm Drive and Sugar Street, and struck Briggs' vehicle.
No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.
Espinal was issued an infraction for failure to grant right of way at an intersection.
Construction Vehicle Struck Mailbox
Newtown Police report Marsha Stewart, 40, of Bridgeport, operating a 2024 KW Construction T880, was backing out of a construction area on Berkshire Road and into the driveway of 3 Berkshire Road at 1:43 pm September 1. Stewart backed into a mailbox.
No injuries were reported. The vehicle was not towed.
No enforcement action was taken since the incident occurred on private property.
Backed Into Car
Newtown Police report Koran Bolling, 32, of Orlando, Fla., operating a 2020 Western Star 4700, was traveling westbound on Currituck Road in the area east of Tunnel Road at 9:17 am September 2. Achna Johar, 47, of Newtown, operating a 2018 Tesla Model 3, was traveling westbound on Currituck Road behind Bolling. Bolling came to a stop and attempted to back up, striking Johar's vehicle.
No injuries were reported. Johar's vehicle was towed.
Bolling was issued an infraction for unsafe backing.
Passed School Bus, Hit Car
Newtown Police report Amelia Schmidt, 16, of Newtown, operating a 2017 Toyota Highlander, was traveling eastbound on Sugar Street at 7:34 am September 3. Ryan Thomas, 43, of Naugatuck, operating a 2015 GMC Yukon, was stopped on Elm Drive at the stop sign at the intersection with Sugar Street. Schmidt was behind a non-contact school bus stopped for traffic ahead. Schmidt crossed the double yellow centerline and entered the westbound lane to pass the stopped school bus (school bus stop arm was not activated) to get into the left turn only lane ahead. Thomas entered Sugar Street to make a left turn, and the vehicles collided.
No injuries were reported. Thomas arranged for a private tow for his vehicle.
Schmidt was issued an infraction for unsafe passing.
Collision At Two Lane Merge
Newtown Police report Lilia Harrington, 30, of Ridgefield, operating a 2023 Nissan Pathfinder, was traveling eastbound on Mt Pleasant Road in the left lane approaching the single lane merge at 4:59 pm September 3. Evelyn Frances, 63, of Greenfield, Mass., operating a 2022 Winnebago, was in the right lane also approaching the merge. The vehicles collided at the merge.
No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.
Harrington was issued a verbal warning for unsafe passing.
Collision In Intersection
Newtown Police report Teri Moore, 90, of Sandy Hook, operating a 2016 Toyota Sienna, was stopped on Wasserman Way facing eastbound in the "inside" right turn lane at 12:09 pm September 6. Erik Berman, 61, of New Haven, operating a 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee, was in the "outside" right turn lane. The light turned green and Moore's vehicle exited its lane and collided with Berman's vehicle.
No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.
Moore was issued a verbal warning for failure to maintain lane.
Restricted Turn
Newtown Police report Edelco Dos Santos, 50, of Brookfield, operating a 2015 Toyota Highlander, was exiting a parking lot on Hawleyville Road at 3:14 pm September 7. Abraham Weiss, 51, of Brookfield, operating a 2017 Lincoln MKZ Hybrid, was traveling southbound on Hawleyville Road. Dos Santos' vehicle struck Weiss' vehicle.
No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.
Dos Santos was issued a written warning for making a restricted turn.
Evading Charge
Newtown Police report Robert Lynch, 44, of New Milford, operating a 2014 Toyota Rav4, was turning left onto The Boulevard from Church Hill Road at 8:14 am September 8. Lynch struck a temporary stop sign, then left the scene without contacting police.
No injuries were reported. The vehicle was not towed.
Lynch was arrested for evading responsibility for property damage and making a restricted turn.
Criminal Mischief, Threatening Charges
Newtown Police report Nicole Wolowitz, 35, of New Fairfield, turned herself in to Newtown Police Department on September 14 on a warrant for her arrest. Wolowitz was charged with third-degree criminal mischief, disorderly conduct, and second-degree threatening — physical threat.
Wolowitz was released on a promise to appear with a court date of September 15 in Danbury Superior Court.
