Girls' Soccer Blanks Brookfield, Ties Bethel
Newtown High School's girls' soccer team defeated host Brookfield 2-0 on September 24. The Nighthawks controlled the flow of the game, possessing the ball nearly 60% of the time and outshooting the Bobcats 18-5.
Summer Chaljub opened the scoring in the first half when the Nighthawks converted off a corner kick. Gianna Mascaro got her foot on the initial kick and got the ball to Chaljub, who found herself unmarked near the penalty spot and cashed in.
In the second half, Delia Stango switched the field with a cross to Teegan Svendsen, who found Sia Verma making a run behind defenders. Verma took Svendsen's pass and got the ball past the approaching goalkeeper, inside the far post.
"Great overall team effort as the team is making great progress together," NHS Coach Adam Bourret said.
In another road contest, the Nighthawks tied Bethel 1-1 on September 29. The Wildcats scored 15 minutes into the game when a cross to the middle on a counter attack deflected off an NHS defender and into the net.
Midway through the second half, Verma was taken down at the top of the 18-yard box and Stango converted on the ensuing direct free kick. Verma had a chance to put the game away on a breakaway but her shot hit the inside of the far post and the ball trickled across the goal line and hit the opposite post before popping out. Newtown left the field with a record of 4-2-1.
