‘Magic Elizabeth’ Book Event Planned
Sandy Hook illustrator Mark Richardson and Newtown resident Susan Kassirer will be at C.H. Booth Library on Saturday, November 14, celebrating the reissue of Magic Elizabeth.
The program will be in the Gathering Room of the library, 25 Main Street. It will run from 2 to 4 pm.
A children's book by Norma Kassirer first published in 1966 by The Viking Press and subsequently by Scholastic, Knopf, and HarperCollins, Magic Elizabeth was reissued early last month by The Collective Book Studio. The new edition features brand-new full-color illustrations by Richardson.
Richardson collaborated with Susan Kassirer, daughter of Magic Elizabeth author Norma Kassirer, on The Knitting Witch: A Spellbinding Tale of Magic and Mischief, also by Norma Kassirer and also published by The Collective Book Studio in 2024.
Richardson illustrated and Susan carefully edited her mother's long-lost work, which was discovered while Susan was going through stacks of manuscripts in her late mother's apartment. She shared it with her trusted friend and illustrator, and the two began collaborating. That book ended up selling out its first run.
Meanwhile, despite being out of print for more than 25 years, Magic Elizabeth “has continued to resonate across generations, with readers seeking secondhand copies to share with their children and grandchildren,” Susan said recently. The book sold nearly one million copies of its Scholastic edition alone, and earned a place in The New York Times Parent's Guide to the Best Books for Children.
Susan says she plans to talk what inspired her mother to write Magic Elizabeth, and why she feels the book endures and continues to enchant children, during the program at Booth Library.
“For aspiring writers, I will also share my mother's unique thoughts on writing — and mine, as a children's book editor of many years,” she added.
Richardson will answer questions about the process of illustrating books and will also have original sketches and art to view.
The program is suitable for all ages. Registration is requested and available at chboothlibrary.org.
