Many Newtown residents celebrated the season by participating in Parks & Recreation’s seventh annual Scarecrow Contest, building and staging a construction within the Fairfield Hills campus and/or then voting for a favorite in three categories.

Individuals, families, businesses, sports teams, and community organizations adopted lamp posts within the campus in October, which were then adorned with their own unique scarecrows. Competitors were invited to stage their scarecrow between October 1-23. Voting then opened October 24.

Organizers expected 26 entries; by the end of the voting period on October 30, 24 had arrived.

Shortly after voting closed at noon sharp Friday, October 30, Parks & Recreation announced the three winners: Most Original went to the Dunne family, who received 112 votes for their creation, "The Headless Biker"; employees from The Newtown Bee won Newtown Pride for their fortune teller "Beezar," with 147 votes; and Favorite Scarecrow was "A Tribute to Firemen" by Meeting of the Mindless with 129 votes.

Honorable mentions include Town and Country Garden Club's scarecrow, with 96 votes, and the VNA Thriftier, with 71 votes.

Connor Negri, assistant director of Parks & Recreation, said 789 votes were received for this year's scarecrow contest — approximately eight votes higher compared to last year.

This was the third year the public cast their votes online. The transition has made the result-counting process much faster, according to Negri.

He said the scarecrow contest is a very easy event for Parks & Recreation to put on.

"A lot of the work falls upon the community and the participants to really make it great, so we're lucky in Newtown that people are taking the time to invest in the community," Negri said. "It's one of those things where the pictures online don't really do it justice. Being there in person, you can really see all the detail in everybody's scarecrow."
