SNAPSHOT FOR 8/22:

PATSY BEDDOE-STEPHENS

Occupation: Piano teacher for students living in Newtown and Danbury area.

How long in Newtown: We've lived here 15 years now - that's almost long enough

to qualify as permanent residents, don't you think? Coming from England, we

lived four years in Philadelphia before moving to Newtown.

Biggest change: I don't feel that Newtown's essential character has changed

since we've been residents. It's still a small community full of friendly

people. I do worry, though, about what it will be like when the new Big Y

comes into the middle of town, with all the traffic that will bring.

Family: My husband Clive and I have two grown children, Paul and Sian. Paul

lives in New York City and Sian lives at home now but may soon be going to

Canada.

Sian says with a last name like Beddoe-Stephens, we should have given her a

less unusual first name - something like Ann, for instance.

Actually, Beddoe-Stephens is not as aristocratic as it sounds. It seems that

100 years ago a Miss Beddoe living in a little Welsh village didn't want to

change her name when she got married to Mr Stephens. I guess that makes her an

early feminist.

Pets: We have two cats, which fits nicely with our love of traveling. Cats are

easy. We've been to Africa and Canada and, most recently, to England.

Hobbies: Music, both performing and listening.

As president and founder of the Newtown Choral Society, I'd like to put in a

plug for our group. We are one of Newtown's best-kept secrets.

We're very informal. We're friends who have fun while making the best music we

can. I'm excited about this next year because we have a new director, Jonathan

Pope, choral director for Newtown Middle School. With 20 to 25 singers, we're

always ready to welcome newcomers. There are no auditions, though the ability

to read music is a plus.

I'm also a cantor at St Rose Church, and I sing soprano in the Danbury Concert

Chorus.

Then there is always reading, gardening and cooking so I'm always busy.

Personal philosophy: Be open to change and take the opportunities life offers.

Respect others.
