Newtown Rangers 9, Woodbury 7: The Rangers struck for four first-inning runs and never surrendered the lead in their season opener Saturday at Woodbury’s Hollow Park Field. Newtown capitalized on a slew of Woodbury errors and an RBI single by John Hampford to jump out to a 4-1 first-inning advantage. In the second inning, the Rangers’ Kyle Wilcox slashed a bases-loaded, two-RBI single through the hole into left field, scoring Ryan Pavlicek and Garrison Buzzanca. Parker Lintz had the only other RBI for the Rangers, knocking in Brock Chimileski on an infield grounder in the sixth inning. Buzzanca and Brandon Cooper scored two runs each, and Miles LoBuglio made several solid defensive plays at second base. Newtown pitchers Wilcox, Jon Hull and Eric Pisani struck out nine batters.

Newtown Rangers 12, Southbury 2: The Rangers broke open a tight 3-2 game with nine sixth-inning runs Sunday at Newtown’s Fairfield Hills Field. Jon Hull smacked a two-run double to right center to start the sixth-inning barrage, scoring Ryan Pavlicek and Max Lopez, each of whom had walked. Ben Stoller, John Hampford, Brock Chimileski, Max Temple, Ryan Pisani and Eric Pisani followed with RBIs in the big inning. Stoller finished the game with two RBI and Temple scored three runs. But the story of the day was Rangers’ pitchers Kyle Wilcox, Garrison Buzzanca, Ryan Pisani and Hampford, who combined on a two-hitter.
