Newtown High School’s girls’ and boys’ tennis teams kicked off the spring campaign this past week. Highlights are as follows:

Girls

The girls’ squad fell to host Weston 5-2 in the season opener on April 9, earned a rain-shortened 4-0 victory over visiting New Fairfield on April 11, and fell 4-3 at Bunnell of Stratford on April 14.

In a 5-2 loss to Weston on April 9, Newtown’s Annie Beier won at third singles, and the top doubles team of Aimee Alexander and Lily Mittleman came out on top.

In the victory over New Fairfield, Lauren Beier earned a 6-2, 6-1 win at first singles. At No. 2 singles, Newtown’s Mia Terracino and opponent Stef Milovic spilt sets before the rain fell.

Annie Beier earned a 6-4 6-2 win at third singles, and Newtown’s Caroline Lockwood and New Fairfield’s Steph Zima were rained out before completing their second set.

Newtown’s top doubles tandem of Julia Frattaroli and Alexander and the No. 2 team of Mittleman and Simone Felis both earned 6-0, 6-0 triumphs. Newtown’s third doubles team of Emily McCoy and Alisha Aggarwal held a lead in their first set before it was wiped out by rain.

In the loss to Bunnell, Newtown was down four team members because of school vacation, resulting in a forfeit at third doubles. Annie Beier earned a three-set win at third singles to remain undefeated. She bested Katarina Sokol 6-7, 6-4, 6-3. Newtown’s other wins came at first and second doubles where the teams of Frattaroli and Alexander, and Alisha Aggarwal and Astid Sundberg both prevailed in two sets.

Newtown Coach Maureen Maher noted that the games at first and second singles, in which Lauren Beier and Terracino mustered a combined four points in the four sets, were closer than the scores indicate. She said that the points were hard-earned and the games within those matches were close.

Boys

The Hawks began play on the road against a tough Joel Barlow of Redding squad on April 9, and hung close in a 4-3 loss. Matt Carino won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 3 singles, Joey Conrod (a freshman) won 6-0, 6-2 at No. 4 singles, and Charlie Poarch and Justin Oelberg came back for 5-7, 6-1, 10-1 win at third doubles.

After the April 11 visit to New Fairfield was halted by rain before the match became official, Newtown had its home opener when Bunnell visited on April 14. The Nighthawks earned a 6-1 triumph to even their record.

 Top singles player Keaton McCleary lost to Blake Norton, 6-2, 6-2. Carino won 6-2, 6-4 at second singles, Conrad came out on top, 6-1, 6-4 at third singles, and Peter Winans won 6-2, 6-1 at fourth singles.

In doubles action, the No. 1 team of Kunal Marwah and Jordan Klein won 6-0, 6-3, the No. 2 pairing of Michael Dutsar and James Frazzetta won 6-0, 6-0, and the No. 3 team of Poarch and Oelberg won 6-2, 6-0.

The girls were scheduled to host New Milford, and the boys were slated to visit New Milford on Wednesday.
