with cuts: Crash Closes Main Street For 90 Minutes
A three-car accident on South Main Street Monday afternoon injured seven
people, one seriously, and closed down a section of the heavily traveled road
for about 90 minutes.
Police report that motorist Jillian Connelly, 31, of 107 Huntingtown Road was
driving a 1985 Buick Park Avenue southbound on South Main Street in front of
the Citgo gas station at about 2:15 pm, with Douglas Leduc, 10, of Bethel as a
backseat passenger.
For an unknown reason, Ms Connelly crossed into the northbound lane and struck
the left front section of a northbound 1992 Isuzu Rodeo driven by Andre
Napaul, 46, of Bridgeport, police said. The Isuzu had three passengers in it.
They were Gregory and Gurvitch Napaul, both 14, and Kendrew Napaul, 6, all of
Mr Napaul's Bridgeport address.
After the Buick collided head-on with the Isuzu, the Isuzu spun and was struck
from behind on its left side by a northbound 1988 Pontiac Bonneville driven by
Hai P. Trinh, 41, of Bridgeport, police said.
The Newtown Hook and Ladder and Botsford fire companies were called to the
scene to extricate Ms Connelly and Mr Napaul who were trapped in their
vehicles, police said.
The Newtown Volunter Ambulance Corps used three ambulances to transport the
seven accident victims to Danbury Hospital, six of whom were treated for
injuries and then released. Three regional paramedics responded to the crash.
Ms Connelly was admitted to the hospital. Police said she received facial, leg
and possible chest injuries. She was in fair condition Wednesday, a hospital
spokeswoman said. Leduc, the passenger in the car Ms Connelly was driving,
received bruises and a concussion, police said.
Police said Mr Napaul received facial, leg and possible chest injuries. Mr
Trinh complained of pain, police said.
After the collisions, which scattered sheet metal, equipment, glass and
automotive fluids over a large area of South Main Street, police closed a
section of the road to traffic for about 90 minutes. Police detoured traffic
onto Pecks Lane. The crash is under investigation.
