This week in 1990

Matt Zavatsky had a 47-yard touchdown run, a 26-yard TD burst, and a 66-yard

punt return for a score as the Newtown Pop Warner Cubs snapped a long losing

streak with a 33-12 win over New Milford. The Cubs also got scores on a Chris

Dudley run and a pass from Chris Petitti to Aaron Zahoric. John Buonanno also

had a big day running the football for the winners.

This week in 1985

Kristin Burke took a header pass from Laurel Whelan and rippled the back of

the net giving the Newtown High School girls' soccer team a thrilling

come-from-behind win over undefeated rival, Weston. Kate Stark had scored only

minutes earlier to tie the game at one. The win lifted Newtown's record to

11-0 and gave the Lady Indians sole possession of first place in the Western

Connecticut Conference. In a 4-0 win over Bethel the day before, Patti Hensel

scored twice and Stark and Debbie MacDonald added the other tallies.

This week in 1980

Newtown High School golf coach, Jim Casagrande, captured the Men's Club

Championship at Heritage Village Country Club when he defeated Dave Stein in

the final round. Newtown's Bob Tynan claimed the First Flight Championship as

he knocked off Bruce Ruderman.

This week in 1975

The Newtown High School football team bounced New Fairfield 35-0 as two-way

junior Gary Pepe turned in a monster afternoon. Pepe scored touchdowns on runs

of two and 84 yards, collected three quarterback sacks, totalled 17 tackles,

and blocked a punt for the Indians in the win. Other NHS players to find the

endzone were Kenny Richardson, Chris Wertz, and Pete Meier.

This week in 1970

The Newtown High School cross country team upped its record to 4-1 as it

defeated Masuk 20-36 and Joel Barlow, 15-48. Coach Roger Streeter's Indians

were led by the efforts of Jumpin Joe Gallo, Ron Gismo Gismondi, Doug Grove,

Fred Randall, Richard Anthony, Martin McClellan, Robert Schaedler, John

Dettmer, John Guay, Bob Grove, Don Kossick, Paul Krueger, Ed Lange, Bob

McCulloch, Ted Randel, George Munson, and Mark Seppanen.

This week in 1965

Mary Lys Jackson scored a pair of goals to lead the Newtown High School field

hockey team to a 2-0 win over Masuk. The victory for the Lady Indians came

only two days after a tough 2-0 loss to Wilton.

This week in 1960

Dot Bowden and Brenda Smogie each scored goals as Miss Anderson's Hawley High

School " stick wielders " rallied to beat Danbury 2-1 for the team's

seventh-straight win.

This week in 1955

Newtown High soccer coach Joe Ozanne converted forward Dick Seman into a

goalie and his decision paid off in a 0-0 tie between Newtown and Watertown.

Seman made 18 saves in the game for the locals and benefited also from the

defensive play of Dick Maye and Bob Benton.

This week in 1950

The Sandy Hook Athletic Club Midgets football team got two touchdown runs from

Tommy Kearns but lost to the much bigger Ridgefield High School freshman team,

26-13.
