Special Olympics Torch Is Coming
The Special Olympics-Connecticut Torch (SOCT) will make its way through Connecticut while en route to the opening ceremonies for the SOCT Summer Games next week. The ceremonies will be at the Jess Dow Field at Southern Connecticut State University on Friday, June 3.
There will be 13 legs to this yearâs run, covering 550-plus miles through more than 100 cities and towns, including right through the center of Newtown. More than 1,500 Connecticut law enforcement officers and Special Olympics athletes will share the honor of carrying the Flame of Hope.
The torch will be coming into Newtown from Bethel via Route 302, and is expected to cross the town line shortly after 11:30 am. The torch will continue on Route 302 to Route 25, turning left and continuing on Main Street/ Route 25.
Runners will turn right at the flagpole, onto Church Hill Road, and continue to Blue Colony Diner, where they will be driven over I-84 into Southbury before resuming the run at Troop A barracks.
Everyone is encouraged to get outside and cheer as the torch passes them.
