The Stony Hill Four Corners Association is planning a community tag sale to benefit the Hawleyville Volunteer Fire Company. Stony Hill Four Corners (SH4C) Association is comprised of businesses between Exits 8 and 9 in both Hawleyville and the Stony Hill area of Bethel.

Newtown First Selectman Pat Llodra, who often joins the SH4C for its monthly business meetings, said she was pleased to learn about the first “fire sale” to benefit the local fire company. The event will be Sunday, September 15, from 9 am to 3 pm, on the grounds of Big Buddha Cigar Lounge, 34 Hawleyville Road.

Food items will be available, a bounce house for kids will be set up, and all the proceeds from vendor table registrations will go directly to Hawleyville Volunteer Fire & Rescue Company, one of five volunteer fire companies that serve Newtown. 

SH4C member and Big Buddha Cigar Lounge principal Bryan Roth said Big Buddha has done smaller cigar events to raise money for the volunteer fire company.

“Our five-plus acres are often ignored, so we’re real happy to offer up the grounds and host in whatever way possible,” he said in a release. “Hopefully it will be an annual event that can bring in donations and draw more attention to Hawleyville.”

Terry Laslo, owner of Wingcat Web Design, SH4C member, and longtime Hawleyville resident, is happy about getting the message out for the tag sale fundraiser.

“I think it’s great — in addition to working with the fire company on the Hawleyville Tree Lighting — we are doing something to give back to the volunteers for all they do,” she said. “I still have some treasures that my mom bought when they were having tag sales at the firehouse when I was a kid. It’s cool to be doing it there again after all these years. You never know what you’re going to find.”
