Ruth Schulz

Courageous Nurse, Beloved Mother And Grandmother

Ruth “Schätze” Schulz, 83, of Newtown, died peacefully, July 6, at Bethel Health Care. She was born September 23, 1926, in Rhinefeldon, AG, Switzerland, the daughter of Alice and Fritz Hiltmann, and grew up in Zuzgen, AG, Switzerland, where she completed her education as a pediatric nurse.

Mrs Schulz’s love for children and selflessness was exemplified by her courage when she was employed as the chief nurse in a pediatric infectious disease unit back in the days before a polio vaccine was developed.

In 1950, she was given the opportunity to travel to New York City to take a job as a family pediatric nurse. Her courage to leave her homeland showed her spunk and zest for adventure. While in New York, she was reunited with her friend Werner, also from Switzerland. They were married in 1952 and moved to Flushing, N.Y., where their three children were born. After living in Flushing and Easton, Penn., she and her family settled in Newtown in 1970.

Mrs Schulz was employed by Hallmark in Danbury for more than 30 years. She enjoyed gardening, knitting, and most importantly, spending time with her family and friends. She was an active member of The Swiss American Society and The Newtown Woman’s Club.

Mrs Schulz leaves behind her husband, Werner, of Newtown; two sons, Marcus Schulz of Newtown and Eric Schulz of Carmine, Texas; her daughter, Sue Schulz of Woodbury; and two grandchildren. “Schätze” will be remembered for her loving, kind, and gentle soul.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at St Rose of Lima Church, 46 Church Hill Road, Newtown, Saturday, July 31, at 11 am.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to the Pediatric Unit, Danbury Hospital, 24 Hospital Avenue, Danbury CT 06810, danburyhospital.org; or to St Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis TN 38105, stjude.org.
