Police Offer Advice On

Winter Travel, Snow Control

While snow has been scarce so far this winter, there is still the possibility accumulations will occur during the next couple of months. To help keep community members safe in snowy conditions, the town police department’s traffic enforcement unit is offering motorists some guidance on winter travel amid snowy/icy conditions.

The town ordinance that prohibits parking vehicles on any town roadway between sunset and sunrise during the snow season will remain in effect through March 15, according to police Sergeant Aaron Bahamonde. That ordinance is intended to facilitate town snow removal from local roads.

Also, another town ordinance requires that residents remove snow, ice, sleet, and debris from sidewalks adjacent to their homes, Sgt Bahamonde said in a statement.

State law prohibits homeowners and private snow removal companies from depositing any snow or ice on any road or within 12 feet of that road, he added.

Also, state law requires that any accumulations of snow and ice be removed from the top, back, and sides of a vehicle before that vehicle travels. Snow and ice must be removed from all vehicle windows. Clearing vehicle windows of snow and ice prevents that vehicle’s driver from having an obstructed view while driving.

Additionally, if snow and ice deposits are not cleared from a vehicle, that snow and ice and can break loose from the moving vehicle, creating hazards to other drivers, Sgt Bahamonde said.
