Burglary/Larceny

Police report that sometime overnight on April 6-7, someone burglarized and stole a large amount of copper piping from a vacant house on Pole Bridge Road, which is posted for sale.

The thief or thieves forced entry into the house through a rear door and then stole the piping from the building’s heating system, police said.

Police Officer Matthew Pirhala is investigating the incident and asks anyone with knowledge of the crime to contact him at the police station at 3 Main Street, telephone 203-426-5841.

SUV vs Tree

Police report that motorist Mark Pavlicek, 45, of 14 Serene Way was driving a 2014 Range Rover SUV southward on Serene Way at about 12:26 am on April 7, when a deer ran onto the road, resulting in Pavlicek swerving to the right to avoid the deer, but then traveling off the road and striking a tree near 5 Serene Way.

There were no injuries, police said. Police said they issued Pavlicek an infraction for making a restricted turn.

Five Charges

Police report they spotted motorist Gail White, 27, of Bridgeport using a handheld cellphone while driving near 30 South Main Street at about 11:45 am on April 7, so they stopped her to investigate.

Police then charged White with illegal use of a handheld cellphone while driving, failure to have automotive insurance, misuse of marker plates, failure to carry a driver’s license, and driving an unregistered vehicle.

White was released on a written promise to appear in court on April 29.

Warrant Served

State police said they went to 6 Scenic Drive on the night of April 8 and served a warrant, lodging a charge of first-degree failure to appear in court against Elizabeth Pagliaroli, 51, of that address.

State police said she was held on $10,000 bail for arraignment the next day in Waterbury Superior Court.

Truck Strikes Sign

At about 10:26 am on April 11, trucker JS Hunter, 56, of Fair Grove, Mo., was driving a 2008 Peterbilt tractor-trailer truck northward on Queen Street and then attempted to turn right onto eastbound Church Hill Road, when the vehicle’s trailer struck a traffic sign, damaging the sign, police report.

There were no injuries. Hunter received a written warning for making an improper turn, according to police.

Truck Hits Tree

Police said motorist James Walsh, 23, of 11 Yearling Lane was driving a 2004 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck westward near 5 Horseshoe Ridge Road at about 2:11 am on April 13, when he lost control of the truck while attempting to negotiate a curve in the road, went off the left side of the street and then struck a tree.

Walsh received minor injuries, police said. Police report they issued Walsh an infraction for making a restricted turn.

Hawleyville Accident

State police said that at about 10:30 am on April 13, at the end of the Exit 9 off-ramp for westbound Interstate 84, motorist Rul Araujo, 52, of Naugatuck, who was driving a 2007 Mazda Miata MX-5 roadster, struck the rear end of a 2008 BMW X-3 SUV driven by Jennifer O’Brien, 45, of 20 Housatonic Drive.

There were no injuries. State police said they issued Araujo an infraction for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart.

Theft At Supermarket

Police report that on the afternoon of April 16, they charged David Cunningham, 29, of 7 Sugar Street with sixth-degree larceny and with credit card theft in connection with an incident at Caraluzzi’s Market at 5 Queen Street.

Police said that Cunningham allegedly stole the items from the pocketbook of an unsuspecting shopper at the supermarket.

After processing, police released Cunningham on $500 bail for an April 24 court appearance.

Police urge that shoppers not leave their valuables unattended in shopping carts while shopping.

South Main DUI

Police report that at about 1:16 am on April 17, they stopped motorist Craig Santos, 23, of Bridgeport because he had been veering between the two southbound lanes of South Main Street near Sand Hill Plaza in Botsford.

After investigating, police charged Santos with driving under the influence and with failure to drive in the proper lane.

Santos was released on $100 bail for a May 1 court appearance.
