Saab vs Toyota

Police said that at about 2:30 pm on August 9 a two-vehicle collision happened on South Main Street at its intersection with Elm Drive.

In that incident, motorist Rachel Cole, 18, of 6 Benjamin Drive, who was driving a 2002 Saab 9-3 sedan, struck the rear end of a 1997 Toyota Tacoma pickup truck driven by Manuel Diogo, 62, of Danbury, after the Toyota had come to an abrupt stop.

There were no injuries. Police said they verbally warned Cole for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart.

Three Vehicles

State police report a three-vehicle accident on westbound Interstate 84 near Exit 10 at about 8:49 am on August 11.

The accident involved motorist William Reilly, 58, of Prospect, who was driving a 2011 Audi A-4 auto, motorist Tracy McKay, 30, of Carlisle, N.Y., who was driving a 1997 Toyota vehicle, and motorist James Mulford, 31, of Hartford, who was driving a 2007 Volkswagen Rabbit, state police said.

There were no injuries. Enforcement information was not available.

Bayberry Drive

Police report that a two-vehicle accident occurred on Bayberry Drive, near the Monroe town line, about 5:24 pm on August 11.

Motorist Richard Bretton, 53, of 12 Blue Spruce Drive was driving a 2014 Toyota sedan westward, as motorist Charles Bedo, 25, of Monroe was driving a 2012 Mercedes-Benz L-300-W4 sedan eastward, police said.

As the two vehicles passed each other, their exterior left rear-view mirrors collided, police said. There were no injuries. Police took no enforcement.

Botsford Accident

At about 10:25 pm on August 11, motorist Yolanda Grajalez, 37, of Bridgeport, who was driving a 2000 Honda Odyssey minivan southward on South Main Street, was waiting for a red traffic signal at the intersection of South Main Street, Botsford Hill Road, and Meadowbrook Road, when the Honda was then struck from behind by southbound motorist George Long, 32, of Danbury, who was driving a 2010 Toyota Corolla sedan, police report.

There were no injuries. Police said they verbally warned Long for following too closely.

Interstate Accident

State police report a three-vehicle accident on eastbound Interstate 84, about 1,500 feet west of Exit 11 at about 6:25 pm on August 12.

Motorist Brent Elwood, 35, of Patterson, N.Y., who was driving a 2000 Honda Accord, and motorist Michael Anderson, 25, of Albuquerque, N.M., who was driving a 2007 Honda Fit, both slowed for traffic conditions, after which both vehicles were struck by motorist Elizabeth Zadora, 29, of Waterbury, who was driving a 2009 Nissan Rogue, according to state police.

The Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps transported Holly Ann Elwood, 33, of Patterson, who was a passenger in the Honda Accord, to Danbury Hospital for treatment of pain, state police said.

Zadora received an infraction for failure to drive a reasonable distance part, according to state police.

Hattertown Road

Police report that at about 6:44 pm on August 12 on northbound Hattertown Road, north of its intersection with Aunt Park Lane, motorist William Ramirez, 22, of Bethel, who was driving a 2006 Mitsubishi Eclipse coupe, struck the rear end of a northbound 2013 Hyundai Accent sedan driven by Jessica Russo, 27, of Bethel.

There were no injuries. Police said they issued Ramirez a written warning for following too closely.

Drug Charges

Police report that they responded on the night of August 12 to the area near the intersection of Castle Hill Road and Old Castle Drive after receiving a complaint about suspicious activity in that area.

Police said that after investigating, they charged Zachary Dauz, 29, of 24 Paugussett Road with two counts of marijuana possession, one count of marijuana possession with intent to sell, and one count of possession of drug paraphernalia.

After processing, police released Dauz on $10,000 nonsurety bail for an August 26 arraignment on the charges in Danbury Superior Court.

Flagpole Intersection

A two-vehicle accident occurred at the flagpole intersection of Main Street, Church Hill Road, and West Street about 9:56 am on August 13.

Police report that motorist Abigail Mary Fagerholm, 19, of 6 Mountain Laurel Lane was driving a 2008 Kia Optima sedan southward on Main Street.

At that time, motorist Mary Lou Strano, 65, of Bethel, who was driving a 2009 Ford F-150 pickup truck, was attempting to make a left turn from westbound Church Hill Road onto southbound Main Street, police said.

The Ford then struck the Kia, police said. There were no injuries. Police said they issued Strano an infraction for failure to obey a stop sign.

Slippery Roadway

Motorist Kelly Stiles, 26, of Brookfield was driving a 2007 Chevrolet Impala sedan westward on Wasserman Way, east of its intersection with Mile Hill Road South, about 10:17 am on August 13 in wet conditions, when the auto was traveling too fast and then spun around and went off the roadway, striking a traffic sign along the right road shoulder, police said.

Stiles was not injured. Police said they verbally warned Stiles for traveling too fast for conditions.

South Main Crash

Police report a two-vehicle accident on southbound South Main Street at its intersection with Elm Drive about 11:20 am on August 13.

Motorist Richard Giannettino, 69, of 18 Chestnut Hill Road, who was driving a 2001 Dodge Durango SUV, struck the rear end of a southbound 2008 Honda Accord sedan driven by Dawoud Ahmad, 52, of Granby, police said.

There were no injuries. Police report they verbally warned Giannettino for following too closely.

Pilot vs Pilot

At about 1:50 pm on August 13, motorist Brian Denham, 58, of Monroe, who was driving a 2008 Honda Pilot SUV, was waiting for a red traffic on southbound South Main Street at its intersection with Meadowbrook Road and Botsford Hill Road, police said.

Southbound motorist Lorraine Iwasziewicz, 56, of Monroe, who was driving a 2013 Honda Pilot SUV, then struck the rear end of the SUV driven by Denham, police said.

There were no injuries. Police said they issued Iwasziewicz an infraction for distracted driving and also issued her a written warning for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart.

Collision In Heavy Traffic

State police report a two-vehicle accident on eastbound Interstate 84, almost one mile west of Exit 10, about 4:50 pm on August 13. The collision occurred in heavy traffic.

State police said the accident involved motorist Peter Ko, 38, of Lagrangeville, N.Y., who was driving a 2006 Ford 500 auto, and motorist Suzanne McKirdy, 65, of Woodbury, who was driving a 2009 Honda Civic.

There were no injuries. Enforcement information was not available.

Highway Collision

At about 5:09 pm on August 13, a two-vehicle accident occurred on eastbound Interstate 84, about one-half mile east of Exit 9.

Motorist Ivan Leibin, 62, of West Hartford, who was driving a 2009 Honda Civic, slowed to a stop for heavy traffic and was then struck from behind by motorist Stephanie Daley-Duquette, 28, of Naugatuck, who was driving a 2009 Nissan Cube, state police said.

There were no injuries. Daley-Duquette received an infraction for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart, state police said.

I-84 Mishap

Trucker David Zito, 46, of Newington was driving a 2013 Freightliner PX-12 tractor-trailer truck eastward on Interstate 84, almost one mile west of Exit 13, at about 6:19 pm on August 13, when a piece of equipment mounted beneath the truck’s trailer section detached and then smashed into the hood and windshield of a 2000 Honda CRV SUV driven by Grace Nieves, 22, of Waterbury, state police report.

The impact heavily damaged the Honda’s windshield. There were no injuries. Enforcement information was not available.

Shoplifting Charge

At about 9 pm on August 13, police received a complaint about alleged shoplifting at the Big Y supermarket at Newtown Shopping Village at 6 Queen Street, so they went there to investigate.

Police said that after investigating, they charged Kristin Collins, 40, of 2 Shady Rest Boulevard with sixth-degree larceny. After processing, she was released on $500 nonsurety bail for an August 26 court appearance, police said.

Edmond Town Hall Trespassing

Police said that at about 5:47 am on August 15, they received a report that a man was inside Edmond Town Hall at 45 Main Street without authorization, so they went there to investigate.

After investigating the complaint, police charged that man, Joseph Tortora 65, of 22 Jeremiah Road with third-degree burglary, first-degree criminal trespassing, and sixth-degree larceny.

Following arrest processing, police released Tortora from custody for a September 3 arraignment on the charges in Danbury Superior Court.

Evading Driver Sought

Police are investigating an accident in which the driver who caused the collision fled the scene of the crash at about 11:35 am on August 15.

A local woman, who was driving a 2009 Honda Accord sedan, was stopped at a red traffic signal on the Sand Hill Plaza exit driveway at 228 South Main Street, when the Honda was struck by an unknown light-colored sedan, police said. The Honda driver was uninjured.

The offender then drove away from the scene, heading southward on South Main Street, police said. The offender was described as a white woman in her mid-50s with brown hair and a ponytail.

Police ask anyone who knows the identity of the offender to contact them at the police station at 3 Main Street, telephone 203-426-5841.

Russett Road

Police report that motorist Colleen Durkin, 20, of 4 Wine Sap Road, who was driving a 2005 Honda Pilot SUV westward on Russett Road about 4:11 am on August 16, went off the road right shoulder and then struck a curbside residential mailbox at 12 Russett Road, after which the vehicle traveled back across the road and went off the left road shoulder, striking a tree.

Durkin was not injured. Police said they issued Durkin an infraction for making a restricted turn.

Motorcycle vs Jetta

Police report a two-vehicle accident on South Main Street, near its intersection with Kay Lane, at about 9:54 am on August 16.

Northbound motorist Jesse Gatten, 25, of New Milford, who was driving a 2013 Volkswagen Jetta sedan, stopped for traffic conditions and was then struck from behind by northbound motorist Jason Rohrbach, 28, of Mattituck, N.Y., who was driving a 2012 BMW motorcycle, police said.

There were no injuries. Rohrbach received a written warning for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart, police said.

Sandy Hook Crash

A two-vehicle collision occurred at the intersection of Berkshire Road and Wasserman Way about 11:43 am on August 16.

Motorist Richard Kvietkus, 71, of Bethlehem, who was driving a 2007 Jeep Commander SUV northward on Berkshire Road, stopped for traffic conditions and was then struck from behind by motorist John Thorson, 71, of Bethel who was driving a 2008 Buick Enclave SUV, according to police.

There were no injuries. Thorson received a written warning for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart, police report.

Tundra vs Corvette

Police report that at about 7:30 pm on August 16, motorist Jill Weber, 57, of 34 High Rock Road, who was driving a 2005 Toyota Tundra pickup truck in the driveway at Ferris Acres Creamery at 144 Sugar Street (Route 302), backed up and accidentally struck an unoccupied 1970 Chevrolet Corvette convertible.

There were no injuries. Police took no enforcement.

DUI Warrant

After learning that police held a warrant for his arrest, Kevin Gordon, 53, of 46 Philo Curtis Road went to the police station on the evening of August 17 and was charged with driving under the influence, failure to drive in the proper lane, and failure to have automotive insurance and/or a vehicle registration, police said.

Police said the charges stem from their investigation into a motor vehicle accident that occurred near 44 Swamp Road on January 26.

Gordon was released on $100 bail for an August 28 court appearance, police said.

Criminal Charges

At about 4 pm on August 17, Olajuwon Harrington, 24, of Waterbury turned himself over to police at the police station and was charged on a warrant with third-degree burglary, fourth-degree larceny, and second-degree making a false statement, police said.

Police said the charges stem from their investigation into a complaint they received on March 22.

After processing, police released Harrington on $1,000 nonsurety bail for an August 28 court appearance.

Multiple Charges

Police report that during a sobriety checkpoint, which they held on August 16-17 on Hawleyville Road near Covered Bridge Road, they stopped a motorist to investigate.

Police said they stopped Kentrell Morey, 20, of Waterbury, about 1:47 am on August 17 and charged him with three counts of possession of weapon in a motor vehicle, and with one count each of possession of narcotics and driving with a suspended license.

The weapons which Morey possessed were two kitchen knives and a small baseball bat, police said. After arrest processing, police released Morey on $1,000 nonsurety bail for an August 28 court appearance.

Altercation

Police received a call for help from the town land use agency at Newtown Municipal Center at 3 Primrose Street about 2:50 pm on August 20, reporting that a man was causing a disturbance there.

Multiple police responded to investigate, after which “the subject became combative with officers,” police said.

Police said they charged Justin Gaydosh, 30, of 90 Huntingtown Road with beach of peace, first-degree criminal trespassing, and interfering with police.

After processing the arrest, police released Gaydosh on $1,000 nonsurety bail for a September 3 arraignment on the charges in Danbury Superior Court.
