The Newtown Cultural Arts Commission is pleased to announce that Phil Bowler, a celebrated jazz bass player and Newtown resident, will be the guest artist at The Flagpole Radio Café on Saturday, February 6. A graduate of the prestigious Hartt School of Music, Phil Bowler is widely respected for his artistry as well as his award-winning radio program “Jazz Adventures” on WPKN radio. He has performed on many jazz albums including Wynton Marsalis’ Grammy Award winning Think of One, Branford Marsalis’ Scenes in the City, and Terence Blanchard’s Discernment.

He has been a member of some of the most renowned jazz ensembles of our time including groups led by Jackie McClean, Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Wynton Marsalis, John Faddis, Terence Blanchard & Donald Harrison, Ralph Peterson, Benny Golson, Max Roach, Horace Silver and Jackie McClean.  Additionally, he toured with the Count Basie Orchestra in 2005 and 2007.

Flagpole Radio Café Executive Producer Martin Blanco remarked, “We’ve wanted to feature jazz music on our program for some time now. In presenting Phil Bowler, we’re not only bringing forth one of jazz’s great practitioners, but also one of its great ambassadors. Mr Bowler’s radio program is a cultural experience. He invigorates jazz by sharing his encyclopedic musical knowledge, attracting the finest artists, and playing great classic and contemporary recordings. While his enthusiasm is infectious, his musicianship is exhilarating.  I know he will take the audience on a most exciting musical journey.”

In addition to Mr Bowler’s performance, the February presentation of Flagpole Radio Café will include music director Jim Allyn, musicians Rick Brodsky, Dick Neal, host and guitarist Chris Teskey, and performers Barbara Gaines, Jennifer Rogers, David Wheeler and Mr Blanco.
