Horse Guard Honors Horses And Troopers

The Second Company Governor’s Horse Guard, during its open house on September 19, held a dedication ceremony in memory of all the horses and troopers who have proudly served this state and nation. The bond between a trooper and his or her horse is a special one, it was noted, and at the Second Company Governor’s Horse Guard, that bond is as deeply felt as it was in past generations from the earliest days of the nation through the final US Army mounted Cavalry units in World War II. A trooper and his mount are a team in every sense of the word.

The Horse Statue was unveiled during a solemn ceremony that included the 2GHG Color Guard, the 2GHG Honor Guard, a presentation of recognition to Lieutenant Colonel Steven deFriesse and Sergeant Karen deFriesse, who were instrumental in securing the statue, along with performances by the Second Company Governor’s Foot Guard Fife and Drum and a bagpiper who played taps during the wreath presentation.

State Representative DebraLee Hovey, State Representative Christopher Lyddy, Newtown First Selectman Pat Llodra, Captain Sal Tarantino of the Second Dragoons, and members of the Newtown Bridle Lands Association attended along with troopers both past and present.
