NHS Field Hockey, Volleyball Teams Win

Newtown High School’s field hockey and girls’ volleyball teams earned their first wins of the campaign this week. Newtown’s girls’ swimming and diving team jumped into the pool for competition for the first time this fall and fell 102-84 at Weston on September 21. The Hawk swimmers will visit Oxford on Friday, September 24.

The field hockey team, following a season-opening loss to New Milford on September 14, blanked Brookfield 4-0 on the road on September 21.

Kayla O’Leary scored twice, and Nancy Rodriguez and Katilyn Voswinkel also found the cage. O’Leary’s first goal was set up by Jess Haitz and her second tally was made possible by the work of midfielders Lexi Black, Hannah Koch, and Katie Canavan. The last two goals were assisted by Canavan.

Haitz, Emma Fiore, and Caroline Kingsley were strong on defense, not allowing the ball to pass the 50 yard line.

The volleyball team, after losing 3-1 to Bunnell of Stratford on September 14, and 3-2 at East Lyme on September 16, blanked Bethel on the road on September 20. The spikers were scheduled to have their first home match, against Redding’s Barlow High, on Wednesday, September 22 (after The Bee sports section went to press), and will host New Milford on Friday, September 24 (7:15 pm at Reed School).
