Fundraiser Challenges Skaters, Promises Prizes

The Donate to Skate campaign to raise funds for a skate park in Newtown is conducting a SKATE competition Saturday, June 6, from 11 am to 6 pm, at Dickinson Park, rain or shine.

SKATE is played like HORSE in basketball: One skater picks a trick (no ramps/rails required) and the others follow to copy that trick. If the following skater fails the trick, an S is earned, and so on. Once a participant has spelled SKATE, the person is out. The skater with fewest letters at the end of the competition wins.

The prizes for the competition include passes to Vertigo skate park in Brookfield, cash, My Place Pizza coupons, Donate To Skate T-shirts, and Donate To Skate bumper stickers. Everyone will receive a free coupon for $2 off a skate session at Vertigo.

Whether competing, taking advantage of open skate time or just watching the tricks, all guests will also find food and refreshments, T-shirts and prizes, music and a raffle throughout the day’s open skate. For $10, guests can enter the skate competition and/or free skate throughout the afternoon. Ramps and rails will be set up.

Each person will receive a free raffle ticket at the event to win a free Donate To Skate T-shirt. A large pipe ramp will also be raffled off; tickets are $10 each. Only 50 tickets will be sold.

Waivers and helmets are required for all skaters. Waivers are available at the event or on DonateToSkate.com and must be signed by a parent. Newtown Parks & Recreation supports the Donate to Skate campaign.
